Secretary Ballinger orders agents to obey court in liquor enforcement in Indian country. Belief persists that government will not press further steps immediately. Possible appeal to the circuit court of appeals discussed but no decision reached yet.
Elisha Quilt, a prominent Lower Brule Indian, died at his home on the reservation. He helped lead the tribe in signing the treaty that opened hundreds of thousands of acres to white settlement. Only John de Somit survives among the four leaders named. Quilt was influential and fostered enduring friendship between his people and whites.

Mitchell South Dakota prepares for the annual state corn show and a first state short course in agriculture beginning Monday January 11. Professor Clifford Willis of Minneapolis directs the course with the domestic science department and stock judging, aiming for a large turnout led by President Dawes of Fulton who expects about 200 attendees. The events run the full week and promise statewide instructional value.
Fred A. Landeck closed leases on the southeast corner of Third and Wells, a major Milwaukee transaction. The annual rent is about 25 000, with plans to build a theater hotel and office tower on the site at a total cost not below 500 000 once existing leases expire.

Westbound trains reverse at Whitefish and proceed on schedule where possible.
Minneapolis January 11 The Indian treaty of 1855 case decides immunity from federal enforcement for years. Railways may resume liquor shipments to Indian territory saloons reopen as opponents and supporters expect appeals to the US Supreme Court.
W C Cook Republican state chairman of South Dakota is in Washington in conference with Senators Crawford and Gamble regarding the candidacy of James D Elliott to succeed Judge John A Carland as district judge in the state.
In Washington on January 11 the House passed the Sulloway general pension bill increasing annual pension expenditures by 45 million dollars. Speaker Cannon urged immediate passage of the measure which grants pensions from 15 to 36 dollars monthly to veterans aged 62 or older who served 90 days in the Civil War or 60 days in the Mexican War.
In a blinding snowstorm Chief Mc Gahey led a rescue effort in Williston North Dakota returning thirty lost children to their anxious parents. He located a missing youngster then searched through the storm guiding all to police headquarters where they found shelter before being driven home. He himself became lost three times during the trek.
St Paul reports little prospect the government can force cheaper haulage from Western railroads. Officials say no law can compel lower rates than those now in effect. Quartermaster general seeks uniform rates on long grant routes but the Western Passenger association says nothing can be done. No word from Washington on next steps.
A civil action targets financier James A. Patten seeking six million dollars in damages. The suit alleges financial misdeeds connected to his business dealings and seeks restitution plus court costs.
Cincinnati firefighters and bystanders face chaos as the Chamber of Commerce building burns for a second time in three weeks. About a dozen firefighters are injured, several unaccounted for, and William B. Melish is seriously wounded by falling debris as offices and stock exchange records are destroyed.
Fargo prepares for a busy week January 16 to 21 with the Tri-State Grain Growers convention and numerous state affairs. Sessions include the American Society of Equity, equity district meetings on terminal elevator sites, and events from the Live Stock, Durum Wheat, Veterinarians, Horticultural, Civil Engineers, Poultry, and Kennel associations plus a women’s day.
Charles W. Van Tuyl of Minneapolis told St Paul’s Loyal Legion banquet that Mr Roosevelt is a benevolent despot who could despotically undermine law. Judges Torrence and Hicks endorsed the address. He argued legal technicalities defeat the law and compared Crippen’s London trial with Thaw’s New York case to show U S shortcomings.
In Deadwood South Dakota on January 11 Judge Rice sentenced convicted or guilty pleas from the first week of circuit court. Tom Dare received eight years nine months for attempted bank robbery. Johnson and Maki Finnish dynamiters three years each. Frank Weibrock four years six months for attempted assault. Battershill fifty days and a $100 fine for assault. Norman nine months for burglary. Williams eight months for grand larceny.
A Manitoban blizzard kills four victims during the week’s severe storm. An adopted son of John G. Weir of Estevan braved the cold to fetch cattle and died. Mrs. Turner Wright and her son from Pinto went astray from a stable, dying on the prairie. Richard Coppie, Balcarres farm laborer, lost his way, had feet amputated in hospital, and is not expected to survive.
James A. Farrell of Brooklyn is chosen by the finance committee to succeed William Ellis Corey as president of United States Steel. Farrell has led the United States Steel Products Company since 1903 and has over twenty five years in the iron and steel industry.
Minneapolis wheat futures list prices by grade with quotes for January and July contracts. Hard and Northern varieties show values around 1.08 dollars, with cents and percentage moves noted for No. 1 Hard, No. 1 Northern, No. 2 Northern, and No. 3 Northern.
On track trading shows No. 1 hard wheat at 1.09 a bushel, No. 1 Northern 1.08, No. 2 Northern 1.05 to 1.06, May 1.09 and July 1.10. Flax futures steady at 2.47 for May and 2.50.
St Paul cattle prices show good to choice steers at 5.30 to 6.50, fair to good 4.50 to 5.50, cows and heifers 4.00 to 5.00, veals 6.60 to 7.50. Hogs bring 7.75 to 7.85. Sheep listing includes wethers 2.25 to 3.75, yearlings 4.00 to 5.00, spring lambs 4.75 to 6.00.
