Lansing Mich United States Representative William Alden Smith of Grand Rapids has been nominated by the Republican caucus to succeed the late A Alger in the U S Senate. With Democrats scarce, the caucus vote nearly decided the election as Smith led on the final ballot with 98 votes.
New York reports the steamship Ponce of the New York and Porto Rico line, missing since Dec. 6 after sailing from Ponce, with a Jan. 1 expected arrival home. A derelict sighting near the Shenandoah location prompts fear the vessel foundered. reports cite conflicting dimensions with the Ponce’s 417 feet length.
A jury in the Trusted States circuit court acquitted Karl Jungbluth and Howard Young on all conspiracy counts while finding MacAndrews and Forbes and the J S Young company guilty on two counts one illegal combination and one monopoly. The corporations were acquitted on conspiracy. Judge Hough to hear arrest of judgment arguments next Monday. Each violation carries a fine between 1000 and 5000 dollars.
Miss Irene Miller, a Lewisville public school teacher, was shot and killed by Principal I F Couch who then killed himself. The motive cited is a broken marriage engagement. In New York, DA Jerome says more arrests may follow in the New York Life Insurance inquiry.

Race tension at Copernicus school in Chicago culminates in a riot as 200 to 300 pupils, both black and white, clash with stones clubs and hat pins. At least a dozen students are injured before police quell the disturbance outside the Sixteenth and Throop street facility.
