Montagne Missouri January 8 A gas explosion in the Cleary Bros millinery store last night killed at least two people and severely injured five others. The fire destroyed the building causing an estimated loss of 25000 dollars. Four people believed in the store at the time are missing and feared dead. Victims include James Cleary and a female bookkeeper.
Constantinople orders the Third army corps to hold in readiness. Seres sees heightened activity as troops move from Monastir toward Uskub. A predicted massacre of Christians at Monastir looms if Hilmi Pasha departs the reform movement headquarters.

Waukesha Wis Jan 8 Frank Harding sold his two year old Short horn bull Ceremonious Archer No 171479 raised on Anoka Farm near Waukesha to Frank O Lowden of Chicago for 5000 dollars. The animal has won more blue ribbons than any other two year old in America.
In Peking General Yuan Shikai sent Charles Denby Jr to probe reports on a possible war. Denby’s diplomatic assessment, based on available information, suggested war could not be averted. In Chicago a four story Ranch Offices building fire endangered forty five workers causing a rush for exits and Michael Ryan suffered serious injuries.
In Rochester on January 8 the Chamber of Commerce annual dinner drew about 275 guests with former Minnesota governor William R. Merriam as principal speaker. He discussed graft in public life and policy.
Chicago on January 8 engineers returned to work at former wages in four of twelve hotels where strikes were launched the prior day for higher pay. Only one additional hotel joined the walkout.

Minneapolis report says H A Garfield of Hurley Wis shot and killed Miss Pearl Gayol of Cresco Iowa after a lovers quarrel. Garfield then shot himself and died at the city hospital. They had been living together in Minneapolis for two weeks as man and wife.
