Rochford Land Co advertises fire and life insurance aid, surveying, and timber land for sale with easy payments or trade for city property. It lists truck farms near Austin and Sister Building with two business buildings cheap, plus three houses with tenants ready. It invites loans and loans on call.
The joint committee reviewed eight years of excess balances and conditions in the state treasurer’s office. It urges amending section 231 of the revised code to authorize the board of auditors to hire an accountant to assist in biennial examinations and criticizes the current examination methods. Odessa dispatch reports a derelict ship uncovered near Antrakhan in the Caspian Sea. Thirty crew members were found frozen to death aboard the icy vessel, a stark maritime tragedy revealed by the discovery.
In Deadwood South Dakota on February 28 two women woke during a chloroform attack as burglars attempted entry. Mrs Anna Winn and her sister were targeted in the Winn home with one woman unconscious and revived, while the intruders fled before completing the break in.
Eva May Kreiter, 17, wife of Philip Kreiter, was held to the circuit court on a murder charge. A key witness, Lars Larson, testified Kreiter declared before dying that his wife had poisoned him, a remark the prisoner heard but did not react to during the preliminary hearing.
In Ely Minnesota on February 28 John Pluth a wealthy saloon owner and Tom Marinpell an Austrian miner clashed in the saloon. Pluth fired twice without effect before Marinpell stabbed him just below the heart. Pluth is dying and Marinpell is under arrest.
State health board experts declare the mysterious illness in Spokane a bubonic plague. Sixteen people afflicted since Jan. 9 with three deaths and three light cases, while others battle for life and recovery appears unlikely for some.

John Lee Carroll, governor of Maryland from 1876 to 1880, died at his Washington home after a long illness. Born in 1830 at Homewood near Baltimore, he was a direct descendant of Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

P. J. Poindexter aged ninety a veteran live stock magnate and oldest Southern Montana pioneer was found dead in his Dillon ranch home. In 1856 he organized Poindexter and Orr Live Stock company now Montana’s largest with 20 000 acres and thousands of cattle. He held many affiliations and was prominent in state Masonic circles as former high priest of the grand lodge.

District Judge J J Lynch dissolves the Boston and Montana Mining Co allowing the merger of all Amalgamated Copper company corporations with the Anaconda Copper Mining company. Louis Seasongood of Cincinnati objects claiming the sale to Anaconda was illegal and unfair.
S. D. Miller reports that Robert Lovelace entered his kitchen in a personal crisis on February 28 after complaining his dinner was cold. He was struck and injured in the head by a public safety item, leaving a wife and three young children.
Frankie Burns defeated Lew Powell by knockout in the nineteenth round of a twenty round bout in San Francisco. Burns dominated the action from the start and secured the win to improve his standing in the ring.
Former heavyweight pugilist Joe Choynski is named director of the Pittsburg Athletic Club guiding its programs and activities. He brings extensive boxing experience and leadership to the organization and will oversee club operations and events.
Matt Wells defeated Fred Welch over twenty rounds to win the lightweight championship of Great Britain and the Lonsdale belt at the National Sporting Club in London. The crowd saw a closely contested bout with Wells awarded the decision on points.

The four year old cow begins a thirty day capacity test under Cornell experts.
A lamp fire in Oneida near Hazleton destroyed two houses occupied by Gabriel Gerotsky and Michael Slovak Hagarians. Five members of the Gerotsky family perished in the blaze.
