At Philadelphia s League Island navy yard a surge of visitors followed reports that the cruisers Columbia and Minneapolis the monitor Miantonomah and the ram Katahdin had orders to enter commission with dispatch. Skeletal crews work on Miantonomah and Katahdin while Columbia and Minneapolis fill crew and provisions, with about five days needed before they are ready for active service.
The British steamer Legislator bound from Liverpool to Colon was burned Feb 16 at lat 31.23 N long 44.10 W. Eleven men forward were cut off. five drowned when a boat capsized and a fireman died of burns. The remaining 28 crew and two passengers were rescued by the Fruit steamer Flower Gate and brought to Boston. The fire is blamed on spontaneous combustion in phosphate cargo.
Chicago on February 28 reports two police deaths after Michael Clark a butcher at the stockyards fatally shot Officers Patrick Fenton and Daniel Carey during a failed arrest. Clark barricaded his room at 413 Forty-second street. after a struggle Clark surrendered to police.
Des Moines March 28 The ways and means committees in both houses will report the state's debt at fiscal year end June 30 as 42232650 dollars. They cannot estimate the levy due to uncertain appropriations. It is hoped the state will again be out of debt by end of 1899.
The pack train department of the Alaska relief expedition, idle at Departure Bay BC since Feb 15, has moved toward Dyea after securing a tug to tow the ship Lucille carrying the pack train.
The jury in the state versus bondsmen of ex State Treasurer Bartley returned a defense verdict after 19 days of trial. The amount sued was 555000. The judge's instructions urged a full amount verdict for the state, making the surprise ruling notable as the state plans to move to set aside the verdict.
Navy Secretary Long said no new information emerged about the Maine disaster and no evidence of deliberate cause had been found. Assistant Secretary Roosevelt reviewed a map said to show Havana harbor mines and found no mines on the map.

A Grand Trunk passenger train struck a bus carrying pleasure seekers at the Western avenue crossing south of Blue Island. Seven were killed and all aboard suffered injuries. The group from West Harvey was en route to Blue Island for a surprise party when the crash occurred.
Wasu Hington Feb 28 Judge Day assistant secretary of state said at 2 oclock that no cable had been received from Minister Woodford announcing that five Spanish warships had sailed for Havana. The official also noted that no further information was available.
The monitor Terror entered Quarantine at 12:30 and anchored off Lumpkinsville reporting no vital results.
In Havana via Key West on Feb 28 Americans and some Spaniards condemn the Maine disaster inquiry as superficial. They say two weeks passed with no knowledge of the forward hull, the starboard 6 or 10 inch magazines, or whether any explosion occurred, and argue that experienced divers could have clarified the submarine condition already.

Portsmouth February 28 An order has come to send the warship Alliance to sea on April 1. She will be placed in first class repair by that date.
Key West reports the United States cruiser Detroit under Captain Dayton has arrived from Mobile and moved to the wharf to take on Cooak.
In Biddeford Maine on February 28, reporters say Laconia and York cotton mill strikers will stay out until workers are starved. After six weeks there is no settlement in sight and arbitration seems unlikely. The strike has cost nearly $200,000 in wages.
A Kalamazoo fire at Hall chemical works started at 10 p.m. with two enormous explosions that toppled the building. Ten men were recovered dead and at least twenty injured, with some not expected to survive. spectators and firefighters were buried under falling walls and debris.
The Northern Pacific railway plans to move 4000 reindeer from Lapland to Skaguay for use in Alaska. The animals are said to face cruelty if horses or dogs are used, as horses may be abandoned and starve and dogs cannot carry sufficient food for a season.
