The Labor Department reports a one tenth of one percent decline in January the living cost index to 125.4 percent of the 1947-49 base. Clothing new cars eggs and meats fell while the index remains near its record high height. The drop could affect wage adjustments tied to the index in union contracts.
The Senate’s civil rights debate shows behind the scenes maneuvering in cloak rooms as reformers seek a path to limit debate while Southern opponents push long filibusters. Wage data from the Labor Department notes modest changes for aircraft and farm machinery workers, trucking gains, and stable auto industry pay, with spendable earnings rising against tax increases. A Navy band transport with Brazilian air force liaison is also noted in a separate item.
David J. McDonald, president of the United Steelworkers Union, said he will urge President Eisenhower to appoint a permanent committee of 10 or 12 business and labor leaders to meet with him at least six times yearly to discuss pressing problems. He spoke at a civic banquet in Granite City Illinois.
Forty burglaries, mainly at Minnesota liquor stores, were cleared up with five men arrested. Three suspects Ter rence Schwinden of St Paul John Rawlins of Minneapolis and Robert Rondeau of St Paul were named. Loot totaled about $40000 with many bottle goods from 18 liquor stores. Additional arrests were made in Wisconsin and among youths.
Residents of Chalkhill and Uniontown seek answers as Daniel Raymond, 42, opened fire from his second story home, killing four passersby and wounding five before a tank-based police assault ended the rampage. Names of victims and police actions detailed. motive remains unclear.
A U S Navy band flight collided with a Brazilian airliner over Guanabara Bay near Rio de Janeiro. Both aircraft sank, with at least 50 feared dead and about 30 Navy personnel aboard the C54 flying in to perform at a dinner honoring President Kubitschek. Eisenhower was in Sao Paulo at the time.
President Eisenhower rode bareheaded through a drenching Sao Paulo crowd as confetti filled the rain soaked streets. He praised free enterprise and pledged continued US support for Brazil's development, noting Brazil has received over 2 billion dollars in credits and promising ongoing aid within economic capacity.
A liaison committee backed proposals for junior colleges at Fairmont and Fergus Falls marking the first new state junior colleges since 1940. Austin’s Dean Meland and Harbo led Austin Public Schools through planning as educators from Rochester, Worthington, Mankato, and Bethany joined the push. The plan, debated at a March meeting, awaits the State Board of Education and next education board session.
Three former local boys on a Brazil tour with the Navy band may have been aboard the ill fated air liner. Chiefs William Kenneth and Sam Aksers are listed among the officers. Their father Clarence Aksers is a long time area band director and current music director in Washington DC. Grandmother Sophie Aksers and aunt Beth Aksers Hewitt live in Riceville.
Adolph Johnson reports that the 1961 Minnesota Legislature is expected to renew the redistricting debate after the November election if the reapportionment amendment fails. The 1959 session created new districts for 1963 and a population based plan, with a companion amendment to govern future redistricting and a provision for a special session if needed after each census. Governor Freeman criticized the bill, and the League of Women Voters opposed it. Rural areas worry about losing influence if the amendment fails.
The House sustained President Eisenhower's veto of a multiyear pollution control bill by a 249 to 157 vote, 22 short of two thirds. The measure would have authorized federal grants of 90 million dollars annually for municipal sewage plants, a veto already not overridden earlier.
About 150 beatniks emerged from cellars to rally at Burk Burnett Park in Fort Worth. They campaigned for Pete The Hero Gill and Big Mike Callaway for Democratic precinct chair seats. Signs urged We Like Mike as poets read and an eagle held by Don Pottratz posed as the night’s highlight. Mike warned of a coffee tax provocation and a Trinity River protest to top Boston Tea Party in spectacle.
The Associated Press reports two Minnesota men killed in traffic incidents. Rev Elmer F Brandt 67 of Richfield dies after a three vehicle collision at Nicollet Avenue and 66th Street. The wreck involved Joseph E Schrand 22 and a truck driven by James O Brubakken 29. In Roseau John Grittner 52 dies from injuries after his car collides with a truck driven by Marvin C Johnson.
