The Balkans face rising hostility as Bulgaria and Turkey prepare for possible hostilities. A Turkish minister in Washington warned that a clash could begin soon, marking a critical regional situation.

In Ehrenfield Pennsylvania last night a railroad locomotive exploded killing engineer Harry Tyson conductor John Gentz and track walker George Rickner. Trainman Robert Wenwick and brakeman Elmer Furl were severely injured and are expected to die. The boiler and wheels flew from the track as the engine steamed on. The cause remains unclear.

Edward Relgar of Chicago was detained at the White House after secret service officers caught him with a loaded revolver and cartridges. He sought to see the president claiming unaddressed letters urging occupationally named appointments and was placed in custody for inquiry into his mental condition.
Nagasaki correspondent reports that four Russian torpedo boats were captured by the Japanese at Port Arthur using false signals. The crews were transferred, and a subsequent note says an American squadron may demonstrate at the mouth of the Yalu River. No further confirmation reached London.
Six crew members including Captain Harvey McClean and Mate John McCumber died when the three masted schooner Benjamin Cromwell wrecked off New York. Two survivors reached shore on wreckage and were hospitalized. Lifesaving crews from Bellport Oakpoint and Jones Inlet failed to launch lifeboats through heavy surf. A lifeboat crossed the surf but couldn't reach the outer bar. Multiple rescue lines failed and breeches buoy use was impossible.
Sioux City reports Steven Mauck a blind violinist shot and grievously wounded his sixteen year old daughter Eva before taking his own life. Authorities say he appeared insane.
The body of Henry Hazelton of St. Louis, missing since December 20, 1903, was recovered from the Seine river near the Neuilly bridge on Monday by sailors. No signs of violence were found on the body.
The westbound Santa Fe limited engine burst into flames while stopping at Tehachapi station. The oil burner exploded, wrecking the locomotive and setting fire to a baggage car and a composite coach. Both cars and the railroad station were destroyed. Loss was 50,008 dollars. No injuries were reported.

Fire partially destroyed the Alhambra theater and surrounding hotel complex in Chicago. Firefighters recovered two men and a woman’s remains amid the ruins, with total losses around 75000 dollars. The Alhambra theater structure and adjacent hotel area suffered extensive damage.
Seven inmates at the New Mexico penitentiary overpowered Acting Superintendent R C Garrett and slashed him with a knife when he refused to surrender the armory combination. Guards subdued the attackers.

Spalding, with many cities also observing the anniversary.
President and Mrs. Roosevelt celebrated Washington's birthday by planting two fern leafed beech trees in the White House grounds. The trees, taken from Garfield Park for relocation due to park excavations, flank the main drive from the mansion to the east terrace. The simple ceremony drew a fair crowd as the President and First Lady each handled a tree.
Indianapolis February 23 The Citizens' Industrial Association of America began its first annual convention with unanimous resolutions denouncing labor union propaganda as revolutionary and subversive. The American schooner Frank W. Howe from Ballard to San Pedro went ashore at Sea View Wash. The vessel lies breaking in heavy seas. Three crew died and several injured. Captain Keegan and six crew were rescued by life lines and a boat. A Norwegian sailor ashore perished and a deckhand named William Van Sant was killed at the moment.
New York reports nurse Agnes French, formerly with the Payne family in Washington, was captured in Brooklyn detectives’ operation. She allegedly fled Arlington Hotel with 100 cash and 1700 in jewelry. she pled guilty and turned over 55 cash, 700 in jewelry, and a fur bonnet bought with the loot.
The Minnesota Socialist party state convention met in Minneapolis on February 23 and nominated a full ticket led by Governor J E Nash. Lieutenant Governor Q O Loftus, Secretary of State F Carlson, Treasurer A B Keith, Attorney General G W W Downing, and Railroad and Warehouse Commissioner Cicer C Talbott were named.
