Ottawa reports a sea change as British Columbia residents move from opposing free trade with the United States to endorsing reciprocity. Lumbermen rescind a condemned resolution and back the policy, fruit interests fear loss, and Pacific fishing interests welcome wider access to US markets. The shift aids the Dominion government’s push in Parliament.
A North Dakota farmer writer denounces James J. Hill in a letter read by Senator Gronna during a finance committee hearing on reciprocity with Canada. The lengthy missive questions Hill’s motives and cites stock movements and a Winnipeg depot project as alleged inconsistencies.

A bill proposes renaming the advisory sanatorium commission the state tuberculosis commission and forming a five physician body. It calls for one tuberculosis sanatorium per congressional district with capacity for thirty patients and admission for any tuberculosis patient upon district request. The measure was drafted by committees of the Minnesota Society for the Prevention of Tuberculosis, the state sanatorium commission, and the state board of health.
Washington reports that Niagara Falls may suffer serious damage if Congress does not extend the Burton act, which limits water taken for power. The June 29 expiry could allow power firms to take more water from the American side and boost Canadian imports, risking exposing rocks and spoiling the falls’ scenery.

The Dean bill allowing local vote on saloon questions was defeated in the Ohio House by 56 to needed 60. The Senate had previously passed the measure. The result ends one of the session’s most bitter battles in Columbus.
Australian heavyweight claimant Bill Lang and American Sam Langford fought at the Olympia in a scheduled twenty rounds. Langford won in the sixth when Lang was disqualified after nearly being knocked out, ending a bout that could not have gone much longer.
E F Griffin aged about thirty from Fulda Minnesota was killed and R Iverson of Des Moines was slightly injured when a piling fell crushing Griffin during pile driving for the Chicago Great Western east of Marshalltown Iowa.
In Boone Iowa Feb 22 a steel sliver in a black exalta named William Baker’s great toe led to blood poisoning and his death days after he stabbed his foot.
Gregory S D reports a fatal outcome after a failed holdup at Winner. Peter Klock, held on a holdup charge, cut his throat from ear to ear and severed the jugular vein in his shack. Elza Place and Klock were from Tripp County homesteads.
Paul Freeze, twenty two, convicted of murder in Chouteau county Montana, was sentenced by Judge Tattan to thirty five years in the penitentiary for shooting Frank Gilmore on October six. The body was dumped into a well after removal by wagon twelve miles from the ranch. Freeze confessed claiming self defense. In Minneapolis William Forsythe and two others were sentenced to twenty years for highway robbery.
London reports focus on Premier Asquith's government bill to abolish the Lords veto on Home Rule. Arthur Balfour signals willingness to pass the bill with Lords reform, but rejects any settlement that would push Home Rule to the electorate without a vote. He defends consulting the people and challenges peers to act with constitutional caution.
Des Moines reports Governor Carroll vetoed the Oregon primary plan bill passed by both Iowa houses. He called it an attempt to achieve indirectly what cannot be done directly and said it evades the U S Constitution by bypassing the provision that legislatures elect United States senators.
H. B. Park of Watertown South Dakota, head of Park and Grant and owner of three large wholesale grocery houses in Fargo Grand Forks and Watertown, died at his winter home in Miami. Plats for interment at Red Wing Minnesota likely.
Dr Arilir lectured before the Royal College of Surgeons arguing that modern humans existed at least 170 years ago. He linked the Northfleet skeleton to geological changes in the Thames valley to deduce its age.
Topeka reports the Kansas Senate defeated the initiative measure and the recall bills. The proposals had been approved by the House before failing in the Senate.
