Birmingham reports a horrific explosion at the Virginia mines left 160 men trapped 100 feet underground. By day’s end 45 bodies were recovered. rescuers from nearby camps aided as debris removal hampered work and safety lamps limited by gas.
The House approved the Philippines tariff bill with little debate, rejecting Democratic amendments to add articles to the free list. Proposals to ban opium imports except for medical use failed, while the session moved on to river and harbor appropriations and a firearms flag act.
The federal grand jury handed up two more indictments against Cassie L. Chadwick known as Madame Devere. A. B. Spear, cashier of the Citizens National Bank of Oberlin, faces charges of misapplying 80000 dollars and issuing drafts for 50000 and 30000 dollars. Chadwick is accused of aiding and abetting Spear and conspiring with bank officials to certify checks without funds. Ten indictments total now in state and federal courts. arraignment set for Monday.
