Fire from the Seventy first regiment armory at Park Avenue and Thirty third Street spread to the Park Avenue hotel. Chief Croker estimated up to 20 dead in the ruins while the armory and hotel were largely destroyed. One guest fell from a fifth floor window and perished. Firemen faced exploding powder as hundreds fled.
