About 49 village and township and school district representatives met with the County Board Thursday night to seek clarifications and unify requests on fire protection school transportation and business access created by the proposed Interstate Freeway in Mower County.
A Navy patrol plane with 22 aboard disappeared on an Atlantic radar patrol near Newfoundland. Coast Guard and Air Force planes sighted a red flare and small lights as 27 aircraft joined the hunt, while rough seas and low clouds hindered progress.
A bandit entered the Super-Valu store through a back wall ventilator and stole $900 in cash and checks from a desk drawer. He left about $3,000 in receipts untouched, exiting the same way and leaving Sheriff Rans unsure if the rest was overlooked. The incident occurred in Marshall, Minnesota.
Gov. Freeman will fly to Washington to meet with Secretary of Agriculture Benson and to press for action on Minnesota farmers. He plans to urge a cut in daily price supports and to meet federal officials and a Senate committee through Wednesday.
Singapore radio reported two Indonesian air force planes dropped seven bombs on Parnau town about 45 miles south of Padang this morning.
President Eisenhower says any loss of confidence in the U.S. economy could turn the downturn into a deep and prolonged decline. He replied to 11 Democratic governors urging public works welfare education and credits easing plus a targeted tax cut. He notes underlying growth remains vigorous and promises further steps to protect the economy. He spoke while on vacation in Georgia and later went quail hunting at George M. Humphrey’s plantation.
A three member fact finding panel unanimously urged a 10 to 15 cent hourly raise for 50 Austin city workers in a non binding report. The panel led by Robert Van Fossen noted cost of living, inequities in classifications, and cited 1958 area increases as a basis for the recommended adjustments.
Midwestern Republicans pressed Secretary Benson to consider changes in farm policy as needed for GOP success in the upcoming election. Rep. Miller and Rep. Judd conveyed the request after a Thursday meeting with about 30 House members plus Republican leaders and Meade Alcorn. Benson listened receptively but did not resign, while party leaders warned of Busch-era problems amid a Minnesota special election setback.
In Roquebrune Cap Martin France Sir Winston Churchill, 83, shows definite improvement from pneumonia and pleurisy. Medical bulletin notes pneumonia appears to be resolving and he is more comfortable after a good night. Churchill’s secretary reports he handled letters and remained in excellent spirits. An oxygen tent was prepared as a precaution. Churchill is described as a tough patient to keep in bed.
Imperial County Welfare Director E. P. Boyden says his cramped office led him to hire small girls to save space. He wrote a letter explaining a clerk’s pregnancy filled the remaining room, prompting supervisors to consider giving him more space.
Don J. Kinney 38 filed for alderman of the Second Ward. He runs Kinney Service Station at 600 W Oakland and resides at 610 Johnson. Kinney is a Navy veteran and long-time Austin resident with a wife and three children.
The House Elections subcommittee plans a preliminary probe into Minnesota 1st District results after Eugene Foley, the Democratic candidate, asked for a recount. Unofficial figures show Foley trailing Republican Albert Quie by 603 votes in the special election for the late Rep. August Andresen's seat.
An 82 year old woman died of suffocation after a fire in a kitchen lit by a gasoline stove. Her 72 year old sister Mildred Simms suffered burns while trying to help. The fire started when a match dropped while lighting the stove and damaged only the kitchen. The sisters were daughters of James E. Sims, long-time Albert Lea residents.
Fillmore County auditor reports an error in the 1st District tally. Official township records shifted Foley 31 votes too high and Quie 31 too low. corrected figures show Quie 3,498 to Foley 2,475, reducing Quie's margin to 602.
Eugene P. Foley reports a primary campaign outlay of 1593.06 while Albert Quie lists 421.24 in official state records to Secretary of State Joseph L. Donovan. The figures reflect personal expenditures among the candidates in the race.
Official readings at 8:30 show 29 with a 24 hour low of 3 and a high of 35. GOP candidates report varying campaign expenditures including Don Brown 1 827 77 and Reynold Bergquist 1 175 55. Alf Larson 276 95 among others. Foley and Quie fundraising to be reported.
