Beck Receives Up To Fifteen Years For Union Fund Theft

Saturday Observance Marks Washington's Birthday Closings

Washington's birthday is observed with closures in Austin including Geo A Hormel Co and Mower County Courthouse, banks and post office holiday hours. 214 Believed Dead in India Mine Blast

Calcutta reports say at least 214 miners believed dead after a huge explosion at the Chinakuri coal mine. Two other mines flooded as the disaster unfolded and only seven men were known to have survived.

House Group to Meet Soon on Recount Bid

The Senate Post Office Committee voted to raise postal rates by about 750 million dollars a year and to add a five cent rate for non local letters for three years. They proposed higher increases than the House, mainly increasing intercity letters to five cents. The current three cent rate has been in effect 26 years. The panel backed eight cent airmail instead of seven.

Iowa Couple Dead in Car Truck Crash Near Clinton

A Clinton area crash on U S 67 north of Clinton killed Mr and Mrs Clifton Johnson of Green Island and left six people injured Wednesday night. Police and investigators traced the wreck to a collision between a car and a truck. Names and ages of the injured parties were not released. The crash occurred on a stretch of highway known for heavy traffic. Emergency crews from Clinton and surrounding towns responded to the scene. The investigation is ongoing and additional details were expected from authorities.

Plane Crash Kills 2 Near St. Cloud

Two St. Cloud area men died when a light plane crashed four miles southwest of the St. Cloud Airport while flying low over Waite Park. Pilot Hochsprung 27 and passenger Wehr 29 were killed. Fenske 54 died after a tree fell on him near Giese in Aitkin County. Darmody 24 died when a pistol he was cleaning discharged in Minneapolis.

In Seattle hundreds paid 75 cents to 1 dollar for a dinner to raise 100 dollars to cover goods lost in a November burglary by nine youths from a group named the King Cobras. The boys, aged around 16, worked at a community meal while their sentence was suspended to prove reform.
