In Baghdad Premier Kassem's break with Nasser allies and closer ties with the Communists threaten to split his revolutionary government. Unrest grows as left-leaning ministers resign, the army stirs, and Col. Aref is executed. Economic woes deepen public discontent.
Rep. Daniel Alden Reed of New York dies at Walter Reed Army Hospital at age 83 after 14 weeks of treatment for an infected foot. A veteran congressman and former chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, he championed protective tariffs and opposed the excess profits tax. He clashed with the Eisenhower administration over tax policy and foreign affairs.
Walter Reuther, UAW chief, sharply responded to President Eisenhower's Puerto Rico remark about union leaders at their annual winter meeting. The exchange touched on planned marches on Washington and Ike's Acapulco and Mexico visits as both leaders defended their travel plans and duties.
Austin attorney Hugh V. Plunkett Jr. was elected a director of Mutual of Omaha health, accident and life insurance companies. Retired Marine Maj. Gen. Melvin C. Maas also joined the board, announced by W. J. Skutt, president and chairman. Maas is a long-time Yellowstone veteran and former Minnesota congressman with a disability since 1952.
Washington officials express belief that conflict can be avoided through diplomacy despite talk of a shooting war over Berlin. Khrushchev may press for a summit or heads of government session before the foreign ministers meeting, while Dulles remains hospitalized awaiting cancer treatment. Eisenhower notes Western powers seek progress on East West German issues before any summit.
Austin junior college student John Pfister Jr. 20 resigns from the Governor's Youth Advisory Council on Children and Youth and the Minnesota Committee of the President's White House Conference. He cites publicity and desire not to embarrass the governor and parents. Pfister says his past mistakes and busy pre law studies led to the resignations. Healey called the governor's appointment fantastic despite Pfister's speeding record.
London reports a four year Cyprus conflict ended by a tripartite accord. Turkey Britain and Greece sign a plan granting independence to Cyprus with Greek and Turkish leadership and Britain keeping military base rights. Turkish Foreign Minister Fatin Zorlu notes no concessions to Archbishop Makarios.
In St Paul the Legislature and Governor Freeman move to curb conflicts of interest. Gov Freeman issues an executive order setting conduct standards for state executives and staff. Rabbi Plaut attends the briefing on ethics and lobbying reforms. Bi partisan support is sought but blocked by conservative leaders.
Nate Shapiro, 73, died from injuries after being struck by a car at a St Paul intersection on February 4. His death raises the state traffic toll to 71, three more than last year. A second item notes Cyprus crisis with Makarios and Averoff pursuing a blueprint for independence under Greek Turkish mediation.
In Havana, 11 large casinos reopen as Cuba allows foreign tourists and affluent locals to gamble while poorer Cubans remain barred from the tables. The reform resumes a multimillion-dollar industry tied to Batista era elites, with promised strict government control keeping the smaller popular casinos closed.
Harold McIntire shores up Wimpy a 15-foot long steer weighing 3000 pounds kept for seven years on an Olmsted County farm near Rochester. Wimpy's friendly nature spared him from the slaughterhouse as other steers head to market.
In Front Royal Virginia 22 Negro students attended the reopened War ren County High School marking de facto segregation in practice though theoretically integrated. Police patrolled the area as the small group arrived by car to register amid a quiet scene with no disturbances reported.
A three bill package introduced in the Minnesota Legislature seeks state aid for junior colleges. One measure would provide aid for non resident students based on excess cost beyond the current $200 per student aid plus tuition, with an $800000 two year appropriation from general revenue. Holmquist leads the effort to align junior colleges with state support levels and extend aid to new junior colleges.
President Eisenhower arrived in Acapulco to begin two days of talks with Mexican President Manuel Avila Camacho. He traveled aboard the Columbine I with a White House delegation and was greeted by thousands of Mexicans, with Ambassador Robert Hill and Minister Manuel Tello present at the airport.
