A 40 by 50 foot section of the Wilre garage and service station in Brownsdale collapsed Sunday evening under ice and water, tearing out walls, shattering seven vehicles and stock, and blocking Main Street. No injuries were reported as workers cleared debris and officials blocked access.
The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen pleaded guilty to contempt of court over recent sick strikes in railyards. Judge Edward A Tamm imposed a total $75,000 fine, including 50,000 for criminal contempt and 25,000 for civil contempt, with additional pending actions in Chicago and Cleveland. The government may dismiss charges against five local lodges and officers after sentencing.
Six men were feared drowned after a fishing boat named Joane capsized near the Golden Gate in heavy breakers. Only 55 year old George J. Monaco of San Francisco survived after a coast guard helicopter rescue. The incident followed another capsizing nearby days earlier involving an army tug with 20 aboard during a weekend fishing excursion.
Reports from Gravina Apulia and Calabria say about 220 Communist and pro Red Socialist members handed in party cards to join the Christian Democrats. The defections include CGIL members and National Partisans association members. Other deserters defected over opposition to Soviet troops in Italy.
Joe R. Hanley told U S senate investigators he received nothing of value for running for the Senate last November. He offered to hand over his 1956 financial records to the subcommittee during a February interview at his Perry New York home. The affidavit relates to Hanley’s senatorial nomination and a prior letter to Long Island Republican leader W Kingsland Macy.
American forces smashed four miles into a Korean Red stronghold on the east central front near Chechen and Chuchon with heavy artillery and air support. Thousands of Communist troops were reported killed as US and French units made a decisive advance while Chinese forces withdrew on other fronts.
Washington reports the government lifted the ban on copper for home water systems after March 1. Copper use is now restricted or banned in over 50 products after April 1, including coffee makers freezers waffle irons and AC and refrigeration equipment. The NPA announced the changes noting many unfinished homes can now be completed on schedule.
Gen. J Lawton Collins told Senate committees that sea and air power alone cannot halt Communists in Korea and that four more U S army divisions are needed in Europe. He warned that without ground forces backed by air power Europe could be overrun by police states, regardless of naval strength. He cited Korea’s lessons on building forces and using barriers to blunt attackers.
A Jefferson Lines bus carrying 31 passengers collided with a stalled semi on Highway 218 five miles north of Austin in heavy fog. Two women died Mildred E. Fischer 62 Waconia Minn and another unnamed Minneapolis woman. Twenty one were injured many critically, with responders cutting through the bus using acetylene torches to reach victims. The crash occurred as a gas truck was refueling and a taxi brought gas to the scene.
