A severe cold wave grips the East after weekend snow as temperatures plunge. Readings reach 29 below in Lebanon New Hampshire, 27 below in Newport Vermont and 25 below in northern New York as residents continue snow relief efforts.
At least 182 deaths across the nation were linked to the snow and cold as a prolonged cold spell persisted into its 10th day. The Newark airport reported temperatures never above freezing since Feb. 8, with widespread school closures and business shutdowns. Cars struggled to start amid heavy snowdrifts and frigid conditions.
The AP reports frigid conditions across the Midwest with highs near 20 above in parts of Minnesota and up to 32 in western South Dakota. A fresh Arctic front may reach Minnesota by Thursday night as overnight lows dip well below zero in states from Maine to New York. Public schools close in Washington DC as snowfall and freezing temperatures persist.
Mayor Baldy Hansen filed for a third term and George Weiss sought re election as Third Ward alderman. Hansen, 48, has served four years after defeating William Enright and beating Dean White in prior races. Weiss, 51, finishing two years, notes he runs on his record with a four year term and has chaired the airport committee.
Official readings at 8 30 today show a low of 16 and a high of 7 with clear conditions. The report lists hourly in the evening and early morning times through Tuesday noting temperatures and clear skies.
Duluth Minnesota—The 11th fighter interceptor squadron will depart May 5 for weapons practice at Tyndall AFB Florida. It will be stationed at Grand Forks N C before returning to Duluth about four months later. Roughly 300 of the base's 1,300 personnel participate.
Police in Seoul say evidence shows at least seven Communist agents boarded the Pusan to Seoul airliner that landed in North Korea after a Panmunjom meeting dispute. The plane carried two American pilots and 34 aboard. some passengers were wounded. The Reds refused U N demands for return and sought direct talks with President Rhee's government.
Republican leaders after a White House breakfast said tax cuts are unwise as a business stimu lus. They expect unemployment to drop by March and a rebound soon, with public works possible if growth stalls by midyear.
Prime Minister Abdullah Khalil states Egypt seeks to annex a 6000 square mile northeast boundary near the Red Sea and to push a Feb 21 plebiscite on union with Syria. He notes the disputed area has been settled for 60 years and lies south of the 22nd parallel with potential mineral wealth.
Voters in the First Congressional District forge ahead with higher turnout than in the primaries. In Austin early vote totals near 5 000 likely, with about 1 200 by noon. Campaigns center on Quie and Foley amid heavy DFL campaigning and price support debates.
Senator Humphrey said a Senate Agriculture subcommittee may act Wednesday on a bill to hold farm price supports at the 1957 level until a new measure is enacted. The plan, with Senator Symington, would set a minimum price and minimum acreage for each commodity at 1957 levels, testing broad support for a hold-the-line approach.
MINNEAPOLIS Five firemen were injured when a Mill City Methodist Church fire destroyed the roof and third floor and damaged two other floors and the basement. The church had just completed a 75000 renovation and moved in last month. Firemen were hit by collapsing roof debris while battling a second floor blaze. Five firefighters were hospitalized with chest and shoulder injuries, others in good condition. The cause was under investigation.
In New York federal attorney Paul W Williams said confessed Russian spy Jack Soble attempted death by swallowing rivets nuts and bolts before transfer for questioning. He underwent a 2 hour 20 minute operation at Bellevue Hospital to remove the hardware and was reported doing very well. Soble, alias Jack Sacks, was sentenced Oct 8 to seven years in prison for leading a Soviet espionage ring.
Charles W. Wilkins aged 69 died of a heart attack in a Tucson hospital after a Sunday illness during a western trip en route to California. A retired First National Bank president and longtime banker, he led the bank as chairman after retirement in 1954 and had broad Northwest agricultural financing influence. Surviving are two daughters and six grandchildren. funeral arrangements pending.
