London dispatch reports a highly unsettled political day with indications of an acute crisis and the strong possibility of another general election within three months following the recent polls abroad.
The border dispute between Peru and Ecuador escalates with both nations preparing for possible hostilities. U.S. intervention is hoped to avert war, which would devastate both nations and disrupt regional stability.
In Grand Forks North Dakota on February 18 W S Caul died in a hotel fire at Noonan when a lamp in his room triggered the fatal blaze. Rescue efforts were unable to save him as flames engulfed the hotel corridor.
In Cairo Illinois a mob of about 500 assaults the jail to lynch John Pratt accused of purse snatching. Deputies fire on the mob wounding several. one man is killed. Authorities request militia as violence erupts around the jail and neighboring saloons.
A Laurel Maryland bakery served doughnuts fried in machine oil by mistake instead of cooking oil. Fifty people were violently ill, with two families on the dangerous list, and physicians worked to save them after a hardware dealer had received the wrong barrels.
At the South St. Paul stock yards hog prices jumped to a top of $9.15, 3 cents above the previous high and a record for the yard. The price ranks among the best ever in western markets, though Chicago posted $9.40, highlighting the unusual local surge despite wider pricing gaps.
