Assassination of Grand Duke Sergius at Kremlin

In Moscow on February 18 a lone worker’s assassin hurled a bomb under the grand duke’s carriage near the Kremlin walls. Sergius, uncle of Emperor Nicholas, was torn to fragments as the blast shattered the palace vicinity, killing him and injuring the coachman, while Elizabeth, the grand duchess, rushed to the scene.

Assassination of Grand Duke Sergius Deepens Russian Crisis

St Petersburg reports the assassination as a possible act by the Socialist Revolutionary party against the autocracy. The hit spurs debate on reactions by Nicholas II, the zemstvo summons, and a state funeral plan. Officials announce a royal mourning period and the closing of theaters.

Russians Raid Toward Liaoyang As Oku Forces Hold

A Russian force of about 670 men moved south along both banks of the Liao river toward Siaopehe near the Hw river, then began returning northward. The advance left the raiders advancing twelve miles west of Siaopehe and three miles from the Liao river, while Japanese forces inflicted losses and Russians remained largely inactive on General Oku’s front.
