A storm of smoke and flames rises as South Vietnamese troops burn a Viet Cong controlled village near Tam Ky. A mother clutches her child and pleads while gunfire erupts nearby. The husband is reported missing as troops patrol and retaliate.
The American Civil Liberties Union opposes a House Un-American Activities Committee inquiry into the Ku Klux Klan arguing the panel lacks authority to probe political beliefs. ACLU notes Klan actions include harassment and violence but supports free speech claims. Rep. Edwin Willis heads the committee and discussed possible investigations of several groups. Rep. Charles Weltner supports examining the Klan but not individuals' beliefs.
President Johnson resumes a normal White House routine while monitoring Viet Nam. William Rehard 22 died in a Cleveland jail after a crisis linked to a possible life sentence for abducting a 7 year old girl. He fired blank rounds at the girl Donna Adkins, causing her to lose an eye. Rehard, paroled for molesting another girl, left a note of apology. A Leronda woman identified as about 45 year old Mrs Harold Warwick died in a rural Amery fire that also left one of her five children missing. Four children escaped and were hospitalized, while deputies continued the search for Branda Warwick, 9, at the ruins this morning.
R J McElroy 56 president of Black Hawk Broadcasting and Minnesota Iowa TV firms died at St Marys Hospital Rochester after illness since returning from Florida Feb 6. He founded Black Hawk in 1947 with stations KWWL and KWWL TV and later expanded with KAUS Radio KMMT TV Austin KLWW Radio Cedar Rapids and Coca Cola Bottling Waterloo. Survived by Betty and stepson Tom Craft. Funeral by Parrott and Wood Waterloo.
Two American airmen parachuted to safety after their F106F jet engine exploded about 30 miles northwest of Tokyo. Capt. Rodney B. Beckman, 30, of Wendell Minnesota, and Capt. Cecil W. Powell, 29, of Groves, Texas, were rescued by search crews.
