The Minnesota House unanimously approved a resolution urging the University of Minnesota to televise athletic contests and ignore NCAA rulings. Amendments dropped Big Ten policy, recognized NCAA liberalization efforts, and warned NCAA rulings must not affect the request.
Political and defense sources in Taipei spoke of a Communist buildup on the mainland opposite Nationalist Chinese islands Matsu and Quemoy. Reports said large guns were moved toward mainland points near Quemoy and troops faced Matsu, with Red harbors at Amoy and Foochow.
Harvey Matusow testified that in 1952 he created a false blacklist of radio and TV actors for Lennen & Newell who paid him 150 dollars. He said many named were not proven communists and some jobs were lost, while agency officials said most names entered the dead file. He also discussed apologies to eight politicians and noted Senator Mansfield refused contact.
Elkhart Iowa July 12. A. L. Garren 76 and his wife Pearl 64 were found shot to death in their farm home southeast of Elkhart Tuesday night. Polk County Sheriff Wilbur Hildreth said both were killed by a 12 gauge shotgun and indications were that Garren killed his wife and then himself.
In Long Beach yesterday Mrs. Goldie Wilson left her car to visit a friend. The auto rolled away, she chased it and fell, breaking her left leg and wrist. The car then turned into the Circle drive-in theater lot and stopped before the screen. the vehicle was undamaged.
Republican Leader Martin reports strong prospects for House approval of President Eisenhower's foreign trade program. The bill, debated by the Rules Committee 8-3, would allow a 15 percent tariff reduction over three years in exchange for concessions on American exports.
Claude Lightfoot, 44, former Illinois party secretary, receives five years in prison and a $5,000 fine under Smith Act provisions for being an informed member of the Communist party. Atty. Gen. Brownell hails conviction as a victory. defense plans appeal while Lightfoot remains free on $30,000 bond.
The state presented the last of its evidence in the murder case against Eugene D. Haas 26 of Frazee Minnesota a Navy petty officer first class accused of killing his wife Myrtle Haas 30 Her body parts were found about a month after she was reported missing Haas allegedly chose murder amid marital strife and jealousy The prosecution seeks the death penalty and Haas may testify before the jury after the defense rests their case
The Agriculture Department reports exports of farm products for July through January were 10 percent higher in value than the same period last year. Total value is estimated at 1.8 billion dollars. Secretary Benson says expanding markets at home and abroad is the key to reducing agricultural surpluses.
Washington lawmakers weigh a bill to raise congressional pay from 15 000 to 25 000 a year and raise federal judges salaries. Senate has approved 22 500 for Congress and 7 500 to 10 000 for top judges. some members urge delaying until worker raises are settled. The vice president and speaker would gain 5 000, with current leaders earning 30 000 plus 10 000 expense.
A flock of about 30 ducks flew north over west Austin Tuesday evening as a warm sun pushed the thermometer toward the 30s. The birds appeared to fly non stop at about 200 feet altitude just after sundown as reported by Mrs. Norman Jensen.
Captain Tommy Pittman of Riverside California survived three nights and two days in Saskatchewan wilderness after a B47 crash 110 miles west of The Pas. He tested a new survival suit and kept a positive outlook despite a broken leg frostbite and loss of gear.
In Bern Switzerland three antiCommunists surrendered after 42 hours inside the Romanian legation. They and a fourth man held the building at gunpoint before dawn, killed the chauffeur, and demanded Romania free five resistance leaders. Police entered after the surrender. the legation suffered little damage. The incident drew hundreds to the park and heightened East West tensions.
Mrs. Elizabeth Heffelfinger the Minnesota Republican national committeewoman plans to tender her resignation at the Republican National Committee meeting in Washington on Thursday. A high Minnesota GOP official said she has faced pressure to stay in place though she intends to proceed. Mrs. Agnes Swenson confirmed the plan, noting the resignation would follow the national committee gathering.
