The Commerce and Labor Departments report unemployment rose by 1.12 million to 4.494 million, the largest monthly increase since World War II. Total employment fell 2.158 million to 62.238 million as factory hours and wages declined.
Peiping radio reports Chou En lai is relieved from his post as foreign minister on his own recommendation while retaining the premiership. Chen Yi appointed foreign minister. Chou remains premier and vice premier Chen Yi also holds marshal rank. The National People's Congress plenary session announced the changes.
Minnesota health officials report 44 polio cases in 1957, down from 519 in 1955 and 147 in 1956. Four deaths occurred, with 28 paralytic cases. Most unvaccinated for Salk, 95% of 5 to 9 year olds had two or more shots. Stearns led counties with nine cases. Hennepin and St Louis eight each.
Official readings at 8 30 show a low of minus seven with a previous day low of eleven and high of thirteen. The general weather is clear.
MINNEAPOLIS State Sen Archie H Miller of Hopkins former Minnesota lieutenant governor and 17 year legislator died at 67 from a heart ailment. He had been in University of Minnesota Hospital since February 1 and earlier in January. Miller chaired the Senate rules committee for about a decade and served as president pro tempore in 1943 becoming lieutenant governor after Ed Thye left to join the Navy.
A large banana truck from Louisiana caught fire between Andyville and Lansing Corners on Highway 218 N this afternoon. The northbound semi burned, shipment ruined, as bystanders scrambled to grab bananas and traffic amid the incident.
Albert Lea Minnesota Wilson & Co suspends 200 workers in beef, hog, lamb and calf kill divisions for a four week slowdown in alleged contract violation. General Manager H B Housh ordered two day suspensions. 800 workers remain in other areas. Union president Charles Lee disputes violation and says workers may vote on Thursday return.
More than 48000 Minnesotans had licenses revoked or suspended for 1957 violations, up 8000 from 1956. Revocations totaled 11401 and suspensions 36912, mainly for drunken driving and violations of financial responsibility laws after accidents or arrests. Hennepin led with 13000 suspensions, Ramsey 5953, St Louis 2647.
Dr. Bernard Schwartz, fired as counsel to a special House committee, appeared with a staggering armload of documents after being subpoenaed as a witness in the inquiry into federal regulatory agencies.
Brisk northwest winds push Minnesota temperatures below zero with Inter national Falls recording at least minus 16 and Duluth minus 13. Other readings include St. Cloud minus 6, Alexandria minus 6, Rochester minus 2, and Twin Cities minus 3 as officials forecast continued frigid weather tonight and Wednesday.
Attorney General Lord reaffirmed the 10 percent of the 1956 general election party vote rule for primary winners in Minnesota's 1st District. Bergquist challenged the ruling citing O'Brien v O'Brien. If no nominee meets the 10 percent threshold, petitions with 500 names can nominate candidates for the general election next Tuesday.
The Aurora Borealis lit the sky with red pink and later white hues over the United States and Canada. Observers in California Ohio Washington D C and Minnesota reported vivid color displays disrupting radio and Teletype transmissions as solar particles interact with the atmosphere.
Two brothers Harry Johnson Jr. 29 from Wood Lake and Darrell 37 from Tracy died when their car skidded on a gravel road and overturned into a ditch near Walnut Grove Minnesota. Redwood County Sheriff George Matson said the straight road had no loose gravel and the cause remained unknown. The deaths lifted Minnesota's 1958 traffic toll to 59, three fewer than the previous year.
Premier Felix Gaillard agreed to an immediate parliamentary debate on France’s bombing of a Tunisian frontier village. The raid killed 68, wounded 84, and prompted Tunisia to demand evacuation of French troops amid mounting diplomatic tension and U S concern.
City and county offices will be closed in observance of Lincoln's birthday on Wednesday while the rest of the city operates as usual. Schools and the Post Office will observe Washington's birthday by closing as will Hormels. The Austin Daily Herald will publish as usual on both holidays.
Secretary of State Dulles urged France and Tunisia to resolve their dispute and restore friendly ties at a news conference. He said a foreign ministers conference is not essential before an East West summit, and that evidence of a possible summit agreement is key. Dulles did not commit to a specific action, noting Tunisian requests to appeal to the U N Security Council and awaiting word on precise steps.
Voters turned out very lightly in Austin and surrounding areas with estimates of about 500 to 600 ballots cast by noon out of roughly 13 000 eligible voters. Polls close at 8 p.m. Key cities in the district also reported light turnout, as weather and early hours discouraged participation. The primary selects nominees for the two major parties with one candidate advancing on each side to face off next week for the congressional seat long held by Rep. Andresen.
At about 10 p.m. Monday night a blaze gutted the 40 year old Kenevan barn near Oakland Township 90 miles from Austin. Raymond Kenevan saved 75 hogs and seven cattle despite losing a tractor wagon and feed storage. Fire departments from Austin Rural and London fought the flames as a lean-to and hog house were consumed and debris scattered.
