After a disastrous blaze in Pittsburg, eleven bodies are recovered and seventeen people are reported missing as rescuers comb the debris. Fire officials warn the ruins may smolder for days while crews try to recover victims and contain continuing hotspots.
Adolph Luetgert laments a compromised verdict after his trial claiming the jury lacked nerve and character. He says he deserves death yet insists on innocence and vows appeal to the supreme court, asserting he will be free.
A Rural defendant, Morris Gummer, was acquitted after a weeklong trial over thefts attributed to him by Theodore Olim and others in the county. The court dismissed charges as the jury found insufficient evidence to convict.

The February session opens in rancor as Delaware Democrat Handy attempts to answer Bayard’s anti silver letter. Lawmakers filibuster two bills on a duplicate check and making Rockland Maine a sub port of entry. Repeated roll calls fail to advance debate. an adjournment ends the day.
The Spanish minister Dupuy de Lome resigns on urgent request of Spain. President McKinley may not pursue further action. Senor Canalejas rejects letter claims as a theft in transit while Durand notes Spain’s Sagasta government says relations with the United States remain unaffected.
The Post reports a definite consolidation of the Chicago and Northwestern system. The roads include the Chicago and North Western, Fremont Elkhorn and Missouri Valley, Chicago St Paul Minneapolis and Omaha, and Sioux City and Pacific. A final union with Union Pacific and eventual link to the New York Central Lake Shore group would extend the Vanderbilt main line from New York to San Francisco.
Official advices from Pekin say Japan will keep Wei Hai Wei permanently. China informs ministers to tell powers that no foreign loan is required since the loan was to pay the Japanese war indemnity.
The British battleship Victorious and cruiser Gibraltar head for China from Matta Island on February 11, promising an enlarged squadron in Chinese waters, larger than at any prior wartime presence.
The Senate debated the Indian appropriation bill with committee amendments. Nebraska's Mr. Allen criticized Speaker Reed for blocking meritorious legislation, calling the action a disgrace to Congress and the American people, and defended his remarks when rebuked for language.
General William Booth of London founder of the Salvation Army delivered the opening prayer in the Senate. In the assembly the Weeks resolution calling for United States Senator Murphyʼs resignation drew a substitute that censured but did not demand resignation. A lengthy debate followed as Mr Oliver proposed impeachment of President McKinley over aiding Hannaʼs election. The Murphy censure passed 79 to 66.
A new company with $1,000,000 capital has been formed to build an elevated road from South Water Street to Thirty Month and Dearborn Streets, crossing the downtown center encircled by the Union loop. The project, costing about $2,000,000, will use light construction for electric cars and serve as a feeder for the South Side surface lines of the city railway company.
In Wilkes Barre, during the trial of Sneritt Martin and deputies, the defense agreed to admit key facts to speed the case. The meeting of strikers at Harwood, the presence of deputies and strikers at West Hatton, that the deputies were armed, and that the strikers appeared unarmed were all acknowledged with no new testimony expected.
A headend collision on the Louisville and Nashville rail road near Kirkland results in the death of Engineer Will User and Fireman Ed Davis along with three white tramps. Engineer Henry Davidson and Fireman Will Lee are seriously injured. Brakeman Charles Harrison loses both legs and Brakeman Hughes is badly hurt. Davidson failed to stop at Kirkland, colliding with No. 111.
Inspector McLauchlin of the Indian bureau will go to the Lower Brule reservation in South Dakota to secure the Indians consent of three fourths to transfer 450 members to the Rosebud reservation. The move is to raise funds by selling about 120000 acres of Lower Brule land to pay for an equal amount of Rosebud land with expected non opposition.
Omaha February 11 The Edgemont Stone company the South Dakota and Wyoming Townsite company and the Edgemont Land and Improvement company sue Francis Grable claiming as an officer and stockholder he refuses to turn over stock certificates and company books.
Minneapolis weekly flour output reached 276,860 barrels, down from 286,860 the prior week and 176,100 a year earlier. Superior and Duluth mills produced 42,590 barrels, up from 34,390 the week before and 17,200 in 1897. Minneapolis mill sales for the week were just under 140,000 barrels, far below the 500,000 recorded the previous week.
President Hanford B. Dole of Hawai and his party reach Kansas City from the East aboard the Coronet attached to the Santa Fe passenger train. The special car traveled with the regular Santa Fe service and no entertainment arrangements were made for the visitors.
Frankfort Kentucky February 11 The state senate approved the Goebel elections or force bill by a 20 vote majority sufficient to override a veto and sent it to the house where passage is expected.
Madrid reports the Spanish cabinet, led by the queen regent, accepted the resignation of Senor Dupuy de Lome after a dispatch from the Washington envoy admitted authorship of a controversial letter. The cabinet telegraphed approval and named the first secretary to handle legation affairs.
In St Louis on February 11 Potter was reelected president of the L A W on the first ballot by 217 votes to 107 for Gideon. Keenan of Pennsylvania and Hines of Michigan were named first and second vice presidents with Tattersall of New Jersey as treasurer. Providence was selected as the next meeting place. Both sides claimed confidence before the vote.
Washington reports the state department released the cablegram sent to General Woodford in Madrid regarding the De Lome letter. The statement notes a public letter from the Spanish minister to Canalejas was written by the minister and contains expressions about the president of the United States.
In BonuaM Texas February 11 attempt to arrest William Green and Bob Hunter resulted in the deaths of both outlaws while Officers Tom Milstead and Charles Bridges were badly wounded and expected to die.
The Tess departs Vancouver B C for the north carrying 100 passengers and 877 sacks of bacon from the United States. The provisions are allowed to pass through Canadian territory duty free.
Pittsburg February 11 officials of the Carnegie company rejected a Cleveland dispatch claiming they sought to form a pig iron trust, calling the report false in every detail. They said the tale likely stemmed from reports of large recent purchases of pig iron.
Spanish papers condemn the theft and publication of a private letter. Sagasta says de Lome admitted authorship. Heraldo de Madrid notes Spaniards must endure attacks in American documents and Congress.
Washington reports Madrid accepted the Spanish minister De Lome's resignation. The U S government will not argue over how he leaves Madrid, only that he depart the capital. The state department message to Woodford suggested recall as desired, but tone was chosen to fit the occasion.
In St. Croix Falls Wisconsin on February 11 James St Blaire a black man on trial for an attempted assault on a young girl narrowly escaped lynching. An armed escort was required as demonstrators hurled missiles at the courtroom and the judge ordered doors closed.
Iona Man Will Christof killed his sweetheart Rose Rose on an adjoining farm three miles north of New Hampton after a marriage proposal was refused. In the presence of Rose's widow mother and her two children he shot Rose twice, then shot himself in the side and died later.
In U.S. circuit court Buxton Mining sues Golden Reward Mining for the value of ore alleged to have been stolen from Buxton by Golden Reward. The case is filed Feb 11.
Wilmington on February 11 reports state Senator Robert J Hanby a key Addicks faction leader in Delaware politics died suddenly at his Holyoke home. The veteran Republican figure was active in state governance and party planning for years.
Clinton Louisiana February 11 The jury found Mrs Bertoch guilty of murder in the second degree for poisoning her husband Charles Sebensen.
