Arrangements have been made to move four U S Army companies from Vancouver Barracks to Dyea and Skaguay Alaska. Companies A and D of the Fourteenth Infantry sail from Tacoma on the Queen about February 16. Companies B and H depart Seattle on the Cottage City February 24.
In Minneapolis on February 10 the second annual state convention of retail hardware dealers discussed forming an interstate organization including North Dakota South Dakota Wisconsin Iowa and Minnesota. Main issue is methods to dispute mail order competition. Sioux Falls reports James Carrington convicted of murdering Alfred Erickson December 7 1897 the jury fixed the death penalty with robbery listed as motive.
A blaze at the Chautauqua Lake Ice Co. storage complex in Pittsburgh caused near two million dollars in losses and at least six deaths. Whisky stored there exploded later, amid collapsing walls and widespread injuries as fire crews fought the blaze. Police Lt. A. J. Berry and William Scott Jr. were among the identified dead. Orders issued to Captain Samson commanding the North Atlantic squadron off Key West to dispatch the torpedo boat Cushing to Havana with supplies for the Maine. The vessel will depart within a day or two and return after delivering the stores.
Washington February 10 The senate committee on foreign relations unanimously decided to adverse report Senator Allen's amendment to the consular and diplomatic appropriation bill recognizing the belligerency of the Cuban insurgents. The move followed Senator Morgan's argument that appropriation bills are not proper vehicles for foreign policy.
Ithaca N Y Feb 10 report says a Wisconsin crew representative wrote to Captain Colson of Cornell to seek Western participation in the Eastern college crews regatta. The event is hoped for at Saratoga or Poughkeepsie in spring. Cornell supports the idea but the conference of Columbia Cornell and Pennsylvania will decide in a few days.
Sheriff Mormon of Council Bluffs Ia arrives in Chicago seeking John A Watt wanted for alleged embezzlement of 20000 dollars from an Iowa bank. Watt is said to be in hiding under the name Watson.
Portland Feb. 10 Colonel T M Anderson of the Fourteenth Infantry will command four companies ordered to Alaska with two more held in readiness to sail on short notice, shaping a sizable deployment for the region.
Washington dispatch reports Minister de Lome has cabled his resignation to the Spanish government but Madrid has not yet replied. The note reaches Philadelphia on February 10.

General Pando’s sudden return to Havana from Key West follows General Blanco’s Eastward trip facing cold reception from Spaniards and Cubans. Blanco urged editors to avoid autonomy attacks or praise pieces. a staff lieutenant colonel reports Spanish losses of 57 killed and 14 killed with 226 wounded across two battles against Calixto Garcia and Jesus Rabí.
In the Official Messenger report from St. Petersburg on February 10, Russia abandons Prince George of Greece as Crete’s governor, warns against further coercion, and declines responsibility for consequences. It also vows not to permit more Turkish troops in Crete nor to join any coercion of the Cretans.
Des Morags Iowa February 10 The senate passed the Temple amendment to railroad accident law. It states that accepting aid from voluntary relief groups does not waive the right to damages. The bill now awaits governor signature. The measure enjoyed broad political support in both platforms.
The State Dairymen's association convened in Manitowoc Wisconsin on February 1 with delegates from Minnesota and Illinois. President George W. Burchard of Port Atkinson delivered the featured address.
