Ottawa reports Finance Minister Fielding dismissed British press fears that Canadian American reciprocity would hurt Canada Britain trade or British preference. He cited London cables noting most deals cover natural products and that Great Britain retains favorable or same rates. Canada may further adjust its tariff to preserve British preference.
In New York a man who bought nine box seats at the New theater planned a post theater spread with eight young women he had courted. He told Jed Shaw he would marry within the month and ordered a Cupid iced luncheon with a decorated table and a wedding cake centerpiece.
St Paul Feb 9 The senate voted 53 to 8 to set April 1 as final adjournment with house consent needed for the concurrent resolution. Rep G A Congdon Duluth proposes repeal of the 1909 cigarette ban calling it unenforceable and harmful to morals. Dwinnell resolution for Minnesota state agricultural society investigation passed house 87 to 3. Nelson Lanesboro introduces a 1 cent per $100 tax on exchanges handling grain or merchandise.
Lancaster Minnesota February 9 a large timber wolf of the Siberian variety was killed near Peace Rosent county These wolves are native to Northern Canada and Alaska and had not been known to reach this far south.
Judge Knapp presides over the Organization of New Commerce Court, guiding its earliest sessions and overseeing initial proceedings as the new judiciary body sets standards and procedures.
Washington reports the formal organization of the commerce court in the conference room of the court of customs appeals with Judge Martin A. Knapp presiding. Other judges including John E. Carland Robert W. Archbald William H. Hunt and Julian W. Mack attended. An order set noon on February 15 as the opening time and automatic transfer of pending cases to the new court.
James Mack, a veteran woodsman for I Stephenson at Wells Michigan, is notified he heirs a $100,000 fortune from his uncle James Kelly of San Francisco. Mack, long a lumberjack, finds the sum hard to credit as a single lump payment.
El Paso February 9 reports varying predictions on whether Juarez will be attacked. Key figures Navarro with 1000 federals from Chihuahua and Jose de la Luz Blanco with 350 insurrectos from Casas Grandes race to reach the border city first. Rumors of Navarro's reverse and Blanco's defeat circulate but lack confirmation due to downed wires. If Navarro arrives first Orozco would be unlikely to attack even with reinforcements.
Montana forest supervisor D T Conklin and deputy wardens Henry Ferguson and August Steffens journey to the West Gallatin basin a famed game area where elk and other big game are dying from starvation due to heavy snows and a frozen ice sheet. A trapper reports eight elk dead near a cabin and planning to pack hay for the starving wildlife is under consideration.
Milwaukee February 9 twenty three horses burned to death in the livery barn at Charlies Mack. Twelve other horses were led out safely. The monetary loss is estimated at ten thousand dollars.
Des Moines reports Senator Lafe Young loses the special primary bill in both houses. House votes 88 to 32 against it. Senate 31 to 16 against. Stand patters discuss breaking the deadlock, eyeing Kenyon or other candidates for the senate. House also passes Jacobson liquor bill to close saloons at 8 and open at 7.
In Pierre South Dakota the daylight saloon measure cleared the senate 32 to 12 after the house backed an emergency clause. Liquor interests hoped to keep the bill open for referendum, but the enacted version awaits the governor's signature to go into effect. The original April 1 deadline for saloons to adjust was removed in the final version.
In Bismarck on February 9, the senate adopted a report favoring passage of a woman suffrage bill after a tie was broken by President Burdick. The measure now awaits action in the upper house with a favorable report. Senate resolutions endorsing popular election of US senators passed, but were not reached by the house.
Walter Hartig aged 21 was accidentally shot by his younger brother Henry while handling an automatic revolver in the Horse Creek post office north of Belle Fourche. Surgeons were summoned but the bullet lodged in his brain.
