Omaha reports the Rock Island and Santa Fe lines support a cut. The new fare from Omaha to Denver via Burlington and Union Pacific fast trains is fourteen dollars. Passenger departments of both roads say they are ready to meet any rate set by a competitor.
A war department cablegram from Alten Norway reports the steamship Manitoban chartered by Lt. Devore has sailed for New York carrying 3 reindeer and seven Lapp men and women to care for the animals.
The Cuban relief committee announced that Clara Barton will immediately travel to Cuba to assist starving victims and those afflicted by diseases on the island.
On February 5 the British steamer Majestic is chartered to carry 22 locomotives and a general port to Finland. The Philadelphia cargo from this government includes 10 passenger and 17 freight engines built by Baldwin for Norway, Japan, Africa and other countries. The Baldwin works are manufacturing additional engines for multiple destinations.
Japanese fleet maneuvers before a cruise in Chinese waters while the press stays silent on China. Premier Ito is believed to be awaiting settlement of German claims before Japan commits. The Russian squadron is with policy and smokeless coal supplies are limited.
Crawford Nebraska bank did not open with cashier Grable in the East and president Francis C. Grable absent. Assistant cashier Hobson hopes to pay depositors and liabilities in full, noting assets about 40000 dollars and external liabilities around 20000 while no local panic exists. An announced failure of funds arriving from the East and the president's absence prompted the day’s disruption.
Washington reports Commissioner Herman of the Interior sustains two contracts related to land in the St. Cloud and Marshall districts. Under 1880 terms the archbishop acted as agent and cannot purchase 5000 acres, while under 1884 terms he may buy the lands at 2.50 per acre. Benjamin F. Tracy of New York said his ties to F. C. Grable's Union Hill Mining venture were limited. He served as vice president of a smelter firm Grable promoted but withdrew fully about two months ago, adding he was only slightly singed financially and knew the risks.
The Enquirer reports Interstate Irrigation Canal and Land company, part of Francis C. Grable interests, has no cash to pay notes. Capital stock was 1,000,000 with about 300,000 issued, mostly to Grable for 8,000 acres including 2,200 town lots near Edgemont South Carolina, a town of about 1,700 residents, connected to Grable’s other ventures Edgemont and Union Hill Smelting Company.
In St Louis on February 4 Francis C. Grable promoter and financier remains at the Planters' hotel. He receives meals in his rooms and sees only a few personal friends and his attorney. He will not discuss his business and his next moves remain secret.
Bradstreets notes severe cold, high winds, and heavy snow disrupted movement and distribution of staple goods this week. Northern and Eastern states suffered most, while Northwest and Southern centers showed varied improvement and January trade remained active overall. Alaskan Pacific cereal exports stay brisk.
An experimental mission in Kansas City under Seventh Day Adventists offers meals to the poor at a penny per dish and a bed for 5 cents with a bath included. The menu is vegetarian, meat barred due to cost and cooking labor.

He will proceed to Santiago with a brief stay. Secretary Alger’s health improved enough to sign 70 commissions and is to be moved to Fortress Monroe.
Ottawa reports Gold Commissioner Fawcett has forwarded 80000 from Dawson City to the Dominion government as duty collected by the customs office. This brings total receipts from that district to 195000 since the rush to the gold fields began.
Minneapolis February verdict not guilty for Haswell in criminal libel suit brought by Minneapolis Trust Co against The Times manager Haskell and editor Blanchard. Jury found editorial statements went beyond affidavits while clearing Haswell, with the case lingering over two months. Royal Baking Powder ad appears at article end.

A county probate court board of three physicians would screen applicants, refusing licenses if either party has certain diseases or vices. Licenses cost 2.50 with 1000 salaries to board members and a state health appeal path.
The Mexican government reports there is no foundation for a proposed early visit by President Diaz to the United States. Diaz has warm feelings toward the U.S. and interest in its affairs but no current plan to travel there.

GutTnriki Oklahoma Territory February 5 warrants issued for 73 members of the mob that burned two Seminoles near Maud. A large force of deputy U S marshals will arrest them within 48 hours under United States conspiracy laws, due to feared inability to convict for murder locally.
In Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania on February 5 the trial against Sheriff Martin and deputies proceeds as Miss Coyle, a Latimer school teacher, testifies about the shooting of strikers. Cross examination highlights that locals feared the strikers, a point aiding the defendants.
George W. Finch, sentenced to hang, surrendered to Fort Scott authorities after fleeing about 300 miles from pursuers. He announced his intention by long distance phone and admitted murdering Young Frank Swoffered in Pavia, Kansas for a few dollars, body hidden in bushes.
