37 Die In Coal Mine Blast At Bishop On Virginia West Virginia Line

A gas explosion in the Bishop coal mine straddling Virginia and West Virginia trapped 37 miners. Rescue teams say the number of bodies counted below ground. Rescue operations shifted to the West Virginia entrance as crews fought smoke and fumes.

Rolvaag to take five senators to Minnesota Iowa Swine Institute

Lt. Gov Karl Rolvaag named five senators as representatives to attend the Minnesota Iowa Swine Institute in Austin Thursday. The roster included Sens. P. J. Holand of Austin Harold Nelson of Owatonna W. J. Franz of Mountain Lake Rudolph Hanson of Albert Lea and C. C. Mitchell of Princeton.

Weekend burglary and vandalism report in local area

Over the weekend, jewelry store Earl's at 105 E Water was burglarized stealing 11 watches and two display cases valued at 830. A suspect is in custody with charges coming Tuesday after a concrete threw through an east window. Whittier School had break in with 6 in change stolen. Austin High School also suffered damage and theft. Vandalism reports include three broken windows at 905 W Oakland and damage at Midway Motors 910 W Oakland and a broken plate glass at 709 Lindale.

Mason City Teens Arrested in Beer Warehouse Break-ins

Police nabbed more than a dozen Mason City youths after break-ins at a local beer distributor warehouse. Two adults arrested inside the warehouse face breaking and entering charges. others to be handed to juvenile authorities. About a dozen half-barrels of beer were taken, most recovered.

Convict in Six Mile Farm Escape After Austin Bootleg Break-In Chase

A robbing duo broke into the Coca Cola bottling plant in Austin and Fossey Implement near Mapleview before a highway pursuit ended with one escaped convict, Roscoe Lincoln, 30, captured in a farmer’s barn north of Owatonna after a snowbound six mile foot chase. Accomplice William Gran ton, 30, Dubuque, Iowa remains at large. The pursuit involved Austin police Mower County sheriff and the state patrol with key tip from Everett Bailey. Lincoln escaped from the Lincoln state prison July 16 1956 and had 11 years to serve on a forgery count. The men breached a rear door window and pried open a safe at Fossey Implement, netting about $8. continuous chase reached speeds over 100 mph and ended in a field and swampy terrain.
