The Manchurian front reports renewed Russian artillery and infantry activity against Japanese lines on February 2 near Ta mountain Fangshen and Shakhe area. Japanese claim Russian troops mutilated their wounded after repulsing a picket near Huanglashatzu.
General Oku's Headquarters reports Russian forces showing activity opposite the Japanese left wing. A Russian detachment attacked Pedontai but was driven back with 160 killed. February 2 saw bombardment opposite Shengtan and Letaiyetun as Russians prepare for another assault. Japanese stay in trenches and do not return fire.
Hans Peterson of Coon Valley Wisconsin endured an eight hour ordeal as timber wolves hunted him in minus twenty degree weather. Rescuers found him wedged in tree branches unconscious with hands feet and face frozen. Doctors fear amputation of feet and fingers.
Warrishburg Pennsylvania February 4 Governor Bell of Vermont granted a reprieve for Mrs Mary Rogers to be hanged Friday and has drawn telegrams urging reprieve for Mrs Kate Edwards under death sentence in Reading February 15. The Governor defers to the Board of Pardons which meets the day before Edwards’s scheduled execution. he lacks authority without the board's written recommendation.
In St. Petersburg on February 4 reports say Lieutenant General Myloff may take command of the Second Army in Manchuria. At sixty two he has a strong combat record, having led the Eighth Corps since 1901 and served in Manchuria from Odessa. Gripenberg reportedly is in ill health and may relinquish duties.
Mrs. Cassie L Chadwick declines to sign a petition to Governor Pennypacker of Pennsylvania asking to commute Kate Edwards sentence from hanging to life imprisonment for the murder of her husband.
George H. Wood surrendered to police and is held on suspicion in the murder of George Williams, a young grocer from Wachung near Plainfield, New Jersey. The event ties to ongoing New Jersey homicide investigations with Wood taken to police headquarters.
Workers in Sosnovice, a major iron and cotton hub, walk out with street parades and intimidation. A Lodz clash leaves two dead and two wounded as soldiers fire. Rail traffic halts near Sosnovice. About 40 000 workers are out on strike across Sosnovice and surrounding areas. Strikers at a Friday meeting dragged management officials to the gathering while urging public order. Demands include 75 cent daily wage, eight hour day, factory reforms, and old age pensions. A 12 000 strong march proceeded to Dombrova in order, with crews persuading others to join. At Streshemeschiz the railway station was seized and wrecked, trains halted, officials bound. A report from Radogoszes claims one officer and two soldiers were killed. A general strike began Friday morning at Pabianica.
St Petersburg Feb 4 reports government plans to bring Maxim Gorky and seven other authors and publicists to trial on political charges. Governor General Trepoff says the case is in the justice ministry and the procurator general will decide on civil or military court. He denies orders to execute and notes possible provisional release. He also comments on workmen and governance at Tsarskoye Selo and the selection of workers’ representatives.
Emperor Nicholas greeted a five man delegation from Star printing works at Tsarskoe Selo on Friday. He inquired about duties and hours, praised diligent workers, and invited them to visit the palace and dine with him. He asked them to thank their colleagues for good service to the state.
Warsaw reports forty two sugar factories halted operations on Friday after workers walked out. Factories had been running day and night to supply troops in Manchuria. In Sosnovice a factory owner was robbed on Friday. Lodz saw quick unrest suppression with one volley firing killing two and wounding two. Authorities imposed strict security to restore order.
Berlin reports from Lodz that Friday's military fire on strikers caused great havoc. The Warsaw correspondent notes 16 killed and 58 wounded, including 38 severely hurt, in the clashes observed over several days.
