Iowa Senate approves liquor law change for younger drinkers

The Iowa Senate on Wednesday voted to allow 19 and 20 year olds to drink legally and to grant several adult rights at age 18, with the House previously advancing drinking rights at 18. If enacted, legal drinking in North Iowa communities could complicate enforcement for Austin area authorities as Minnesota restricts drinking to age 21.

Announcer Dies in Montevideo Broadcast

Greg Brandt a 23 year old Montevideo radio station announcer died of an apparent heart attack while handling a news broadcast at KDMA He was found on the studio floor with his headphones still on Brandt was alone at the station when he was stricken during the 6 pm network news.

Fire Destroys Downtown Princeton Businesses

Firefighters battled a stubborn blaze in Princeton Minnesota as three story row of downtown businesses including Knotty Pine cafe and Little Store burned. Fire spread to Coast to Coast hardware Bovee Appliances and an unused Gamble Store building with liquor basement damage. two upper floors evacuated. Loss estimated at about 200000 with no injuries or missing persons reported.

Senate restores aid funds in Latin America and for Jewish refugees

The Senate voted 41 to 37 to restore 100 million dollars for the Alliance for Progress in Latin America and 62 to 15 to restore 2.9 million dollars for a program aiding Jewish refugees leaving Eastern Europe for Israel. The actions occur within the last appropriations bill for the fiscal year ending June 30.

Nations farmers sign up for feed grain programs

Farmers nationwide begin enrollment in 1972 feed grain plans from the Agriculture Department. The program adds an optional 10 percent set aside for higher payments at 86 cents per bushel, with a condition to limit corn plantings compared with 1971. The option supplements the 25 percent base set aside and up to 10 percent extra set as optional, with enrollments running through March 10.

Tanker search continues for missing 572-foot vessel

A U S Coast Guard search for the missing 572 foot tanker W A Fog with 35 crew members continues in the Gulf of Mexico. The Texas City Refining Corp vessel left Freeport, Texas, around noon Tuesday and did not reach Galveston on schedule Wednesday. There was no radio contact after departure. Two Coast Guard cutters scanned the gulf Wednesday night. The tanker was reportedly empty except for two tanks of xylene not deemed highly explosive. The crew planned to clean the tanks about 50 miles offshore to meet environmental regulations.
