A Missouri State Police trooper, kidnapped earlier, was freed unharmed as a gunman believed to be Carl W. Bur escaped after a woman was shot to death at a roadblock near Paducah Kentucky. Police across Kentucky Illinois and Missouri joined an intensified manhunt.
The Navy rushes a second Vanguard test after the Explorer satellite’s launch, with a 72 foot rocket visible at Cape Canaveral as plans for an early firing remain undisclosed. President Eisenhower’s space peace proposal and Nixon’s favorable reception frame the wider context of outer space data sharing.
Bitter cold plunged Minnesota with temperatures to 19 below in Bemidji and readings ranging to 1 above in Duluth. The forecast calls for colder weather Tuesday after a brief easing, with four to eight degrees below normal through the next five days.

In Minneapolis a Brownsdale mother Mrs. Rita Rugg and her 13 year old daughter Estrellita embraced on arrival from the Philippines at Wold Chamberlain Airport. The reunion followed Estrellita’s 22 hour flight and marks her move to Brownsdale with her new grandfather and grandmother.
Two year old Dale Allan Bullock died about 4 a.m. Sunday while being taken to St Olaf Hospital after a rapid decline from a rare highly malignant cancer. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bullock of 507 Myrtle attempted to reach the hospital, but he passed away en route. Dale had undergone major surgery and extensive X ray and chemical treatments since late November. He was active at home and in the hospital, posing for a photograph a week and a half ago. He is survived by his parents a brother and grandparents.
Senators Knowland and Mansfield predicted quick Senate passage of a 1.41 billion emergency defense money bill. The measure funds ballistic missiles, nuclear submarines, detection systems, air bases, and transfers 150 million from other programs, with some Democrats urging further increases later.
