Austin policemen will stop dropping nickels into parking meters for overparked motorists beginning Feb 12. City council set a grace period to allow motorists to adjust, citing abuses and reduced meter turnover. Aldermen urged enforcement or repeal as nickels dropped declined about one third since the plan began.
Austin firemen answered three calls on Friday with one confirmed fire. A gas line leak by a kitchen stove at Alfred Hesch's 505 Euclid house scorched a wall. Tenants at 107 S. Chatham noted smoky odor likely from a dirty furnace in the John Dostal owned apartment. A frozen water pump at 118 Graham, Mapleview, caused fumes when the motor began to slip.
Lt. Jack E. Whillans of Virginia Minnesota was killed when he parachuted from a navy fighter plane and fell into the Atlantic off Bethany Beach Delaware. The 28 year old World War II veteran served as a public relations officer and had been stationed at Pomona New Jersey airbase.
Betty Lou 2 and Lolita 4 were treated for burns after a trailer fire swept through the home. Albert Marion, the father, rescued them. he said the damage totaled 3800 dollars and the girls were not seriously hurt.
The Veterans Administration introduced a pie marker that punctures holes in unbaked crust to guide uniform slices and vent steam. Invented and used at a Midwest veterans hospital, the device helps keep pies fresh when served in hospital dining rooms. The pie slice marker was among 3000 improved methods adopted by VA last year.
House Appropriations chair says the president’s tax plan is not enough to cover the defense bill. Truman asks Congress to add 10 billion dollars in new taxes atop 55 billion. Senators and reps forecast further cuts or tax actions, with no quick action expected on the request.
Four Grand Meadow youths aged 13 to 16 were questioned by deputies about the January 25 break-in at the Farmers grain elevator. They admitted taking beer from a boy’s father and drinking it inside the elevator, and 93 pennies were reported stolen from the cash register. Sheriff Reinartz will confer with County Attorney Sieh before action.
Singer Ginny Simms won court orders for child support from estranged husband Hyatt R. Dehn. He is to pay 200 dollars a month and is granted limited visitation while custody of sons David, five, and Conrad, one, rests with Simms. Dehn faces debt and job search. Simms reports income of 1100 dollars monthly.
Washington Rep. Burdick of North Dakota said he would vote against the compulsory military training bill. He argued the plan would place control in the military and erode democracy, risking a shift toward a military dictatorship.
City councilors Friday discussed attracting federal money for airport land, milk inspection, garbage disposal, and zoning. They noted CAA may cover half the land cost, potentially funding expansion using Austin airport precedent. Milk ordinance enforcement, dairy herd notifications, and bacterial counts were reviewed. Incinerator cost estimates had risen, with sites south of the city considered for disposal and future sanitary fill plans.

The FBI opened a probe into a possible new racket after a telegram from Nara Japan asked the Pacilli family to send $70. They fear it may be from their son Robert Pacilli, a 19 year old wounded Korean War veteran hospitalized near Nagoya, and will not send any money until the FBI confirms the sender’s identity.
Detroit reports 126000 idle in auto plants as rail workers strike lingers. GM accounts for 82000 idle across 21 plants, Ford 14800, Nash 14000, with 43200 more idled by material shortages from New England to Texas. Last comparable wave was last winter during the Chrysler strike which left 150000 idle.
Ankara announces 600 additional Turkish troops will join the UN forces in Korea, increasing Turkey's total to about 6000. The new contingent is scheduled to sail February 16.
The Associated Press reports a severe winter grip across the southern United States with 32 deaths in the region from six days of ice and snow, widespread power outages, and crop losses totaling millions. Extremes included St Augustine two inches of snow and lows of 42 below in Wisconsin.
The wage stabilization board relaxed the Jan 25 wage and salary ceilings to permit merit and length-of-service raises for millions, and allow promotions to trigger higher pay. It clarifies the move is not an across the board hike, but interim and may change with a future formula. The action also permits premium pay for transfers and night or specialized duties.
A preliminary city council report by Mahlon Sissel, police commission member, says one officer was cleared entirely regarding an incident at the Red Rooster tavern. Witness checks continue for a second officer, while other accusations against the department are being reviewed. Acting Chief Ray Locher notes two officers are sometimes needed in daytime and nighttime patrols and in drunk driving cases.
In Minnesota senate action Friday a bill to raise the aviation gasoline tax from four to five cents per gallon was introduced by Sen. Leo Lauerman and A. R. Johanson with support from Sen. Olivia and state aeronautics commissioner L. L. Schroeder. The sponsors expect airlines to oppose but note small plane owners would pay most of the rise, about sixty thousand dollars annually, enabling retirement of airport bonds and funding more landing fields.
Captain Charles Blair, 41, set a New York to London speed record in seven hours and 48 minutes in a converted Mustang. Britain impounded the aircraft for a 20 percent customs duty on unscheduled arrivals, pending a carnets permit. Blair said the hold was a technicality and paid $13,020 for the war surplus plane.
Meltonville's Red Cross leader Oren Igon will conduct advanced first aid training for 15 Northwood High School students starting Monday February 12. The 15 are part of a 27 student class that completed the standard Red Cross course last week, part of the county civil defense program.
Nedra Clark widow of singer Buddy Clark will marry Albert Cubby Broccoli in Las Vegas Nevada. Broccoli was former assistant movie director and member of the family that popularized broccoli. Clark was killed in an airplane crash.
Federal court action and White House pressure failed to prod an early return to work in the days-long rail strike. The five day walkout crippled transport, hit other industries, and left thousands idle while mediation efforts and union leaders pressed for a 40 hour week and improved conditions. The National Mediation Board urged talks but separated bargaining teams could not unite.
New methods of disease and insect control will be outlined at a special meeting for potato and vegetable growers at the Hollandale Marketing association office building Tuesday. D. C. Turnquist and R. C. Rose will discuss seed treatment for potatoes cabbage and onions potato virus diseases potato varieties and adapted varieties of other vegetable crops. Turnquist is an extension horticulturist and Rose an extension plant pathologist.
