Ancient northern Shan villages along the Burma border display skulls on posts outside homes. Each post features a back niche and a ledge for the skull to rest, creaking a grim parade of head posts at harvest time drawing large prices for especially prized skulls.
A Phoenix building collapse in Knoxville's wholesale district after a fire at 8:30 PM killed two firefighters, Hose Captain William A. Maxey and John J. Dunn, as the wall fell into the four story Ross building. Fire caused about 400000 in losses.
The Rev. Robert A. Ellwood of Olivet Presbyterian Church in Wilmington was found guilty on three of six specifications by Newcastle presbytery for a sermon titled Should the Murderer of Miss Helen Bishop Be Lynched. A five member committee recommended cautions on future conduct and the presbytery adjourned. The charges cited unchristian conduct and advocacy of lynching as the core offenses.
Reports from the Isthmus say Colombian troops may be fighting with Indians on the San Blas coast in Panama territory. Confirmation is unreliable. The US gunboat Bancroft was ordered to sail from Colon to Bocas del Toro but orders were countermanded amid the coast fighting report. Captain Torres in Chepo reports considering a crossing to the Atlantic side, raising the possibility the Indians clash with his Panaman troops.
London Feb 3 The dramatic scene in the House of Commons featured Austen Chamberlain defending his father Joseph Chamberlain while the elder sat nearby as a private member. Opponents jeered as father and son exchanged lines, the ambivalence of the fiscal debate and the day’s reception marked by Edward and Queen Alexandra’s royal progress to the Lords.
Fire likely started from an overheated stove at the Great China Tea company building on Vine Street No 27 in Cincinnati last night. The blaze totally destroyed that structure and partially ruined seven neighboring buildings. Total loss estimated at 276000 dollars with several businesses damaged.
Reports from the Boston union committee show thirty books and job printing firms have signed the new union scale and no firm has surrendered the union label. Fewer than 200 compositors formerly employed by members of the Boston Typothetae are out of work.
Fires were extinguished at the D C Cunningham Glass Company and Cunningham Co on the South Side. For the first time in 108 years no window glass will be made in Pittsburg this season.
Washington February 3. The House unanimously adopted a resolution to amend its rules, granting Porto Rico's resident commissioner Degetau authority nearly equal to a territorial delegate. The change does not require Senate concurrence, aligning Porto Rico with previous measures. A rival bill in the last session had faltered in the Senate. The action leaves Porto Rico with most benefits of the intended measure while debate on private claims and other business continued.
Washington February 3 Senator Clarke the new Democratic member from Arkansas gave his first senate speech. He spoke two hours endorsing all presidential positions on the Panama Revolt and treaty talks and suggested the president could have gone further given Colombian provocations. He cited stronger Democratic backing for the policy and pledged unity for ratification. Senator Fairbanks also backed the treaty and supported the administration's Isthmus actions.
At the Minnesota convention in St Paul the farmers decided on independent organization for the exchange and will nationalize cooperative bonds. Delegates will attend the Omaha national convention March 1 and affiliation with the American Farmers' Exchange is not planned. Temporary officers include C. E. Jackson president J. P. Carey vice president J. S. MacDonald secretary and W. S. Wetherston treasurer. Several speakers urged permanent organization.
In Minneapolis Judge Brooks sentences Antonio Calderone to twenty years hard labor in the penitentiary for the killing of Salvatore Battalia on the Franklin avenue bridge November 18, 1903. Calderone was convicted of manslaughter in the first degree after an initial murder indictment. no stay or appeal was sought.
By the accidental finding of a letter dropped by a suspect, police uncovered a plot in Butte to murder two or more wealthy men. Five men have been arrested on suspicion as agents of the plan.
Buffalo observers report a severe blizzard on February 3 cutting rail service into the city. A hotel operator from Depow, Morris Welch, was killed walking before a fast express in the storm. Joseph Kurowski died of exposure in a shed near his home during the cold snap.
Ernest Cashel was hanged in Calgary NWT for the murder of a ranchman after escaping police custody and hiding for forty five days. He made a public confession on the scaffold.
Duluth voters chose Democrat Dr M B Cullum as mayor, defeating Republican incumbent T W Hugo by 82 votes in a tight election. The result confirms a party shift in the city leadership.
New York February 3 Former secretary of the navy William Collins Whitney died at his home after an ether assisted second operation for appendicitis. He passed away around 4 pm with his son Harry Payne Whitney and daughter Dorothy Whitney present. Born 1841 in Conway Massachusetts, Whitney had served in Cleveland's cabinet and later became a prominent financier and public figure in New York society.
The senate appropriations committee authorized a favorable report on the urgent deficiency bill. An amendment provides a $4,600,000 loan to the Louisiana Purchase exposition. The amended bill totals $16,378,216, with a net increase over the house appropriation of $762,216 after considering the reimbursable loan to St. Louis.
William Brown alias A E Stewart, who as Prince Arcrobald Stewart De Modena married the Countess Russell of London, was sentenced to six months in jail on vagrancy charges in Toronto. The theft count was dropped.
Berlin reports that about 100 soldiers have been killed in German Southwest Africa amid ongoing troubles there. The claim reflects rising casualties as authorities confront unrest and local resistance.
New York and New Orleans report a heavy selling day on the cotton exchange Tuesday. Prices for all months collapsed $6 to $8 per bale amid demoralization in the pit, yet a late rally and bull support steadied the close. The drop hit July and May futures, with March and other months through the board showing substantial losses from Monday’s levels.

Diller B Groff testifies he sought to place the letter box fastener in the postal service and denies any intent to influence Machen through Lorenz. He says he did not know of remittances to Machen and notes Lorenz would have halted negotiations if Machen’s name had been implied. Samuel A Groff describes efforts to interest postal employees and officials before and after the patent. He says he never met Machen, who was always busy.

Houston February 3 Three men were killed in a freight wreck near Findlay east of El Paso when a Southern Pacific freight derailed on a curve and was struck by a Texas and Pacific freight.
Justin Texas February 3 fire at the residence of Mr J D Mayfield killed two of his girls and severely burned others including the mother who did not survive. Several additional children suffered burns in the blaze.
