A bill introduced in the senate during the afternoon proposes that admission to any glove contest held in Nevada shall not exceed one dollar. The measure is expected to pass.
The senate session featured a spirited debate over the conference report on the immigration bill. Missouri's Mr. Gibson opposed the report while Mr. Lodge defended it. After two hours the report was set aside and discussion moved to the Nicaragua canal bill with Mr. Vilas and Mr. Teller joining in opposition.

The Rev James Dow Morrison D D LL D of Ogdensburg was consecrated bishop of Duluth at All Saints Cathedral Albany before a large crowd including bishops and priests from across the United States. The consecrators were Bishops Doane Huntington and Gilbert the Minnesota bishop coadjutor.
Senator Wolcott of Colorado, visiting Europe for bimetallism, met with President Faure, then M. Loubert, M. Agnin, and Meline in Paris under sponsors M. Thiery and Fongeiriol. He will next visit Berlin.
A Harrisburg fire destroys the Pennsylvania capitol, severely damaging the legislature’s meeting halls. The loss is estimated at 1.5 million dollars with 100 thousand coverage, delaying sessions and prompting plans to rebuild in the colonial style in Harrisburg or move proceedings to Pittsburgh or Philadelphia.
In Maprson Wisconsin February 4 the assembly saw vigorous bills to curb trusts and to ban convict contract labor. The second bill allows convicts to work on public highways. Governor Scofield released a 50 page report detailing his predecessor Governor Upham's pardons with unusually broad use of the pardon prerogative.
Washington February 3 Senator Vilas introduced a substitute for the Nicaragua canal bill creating a five member commission. The panel includes one army engineer naval engineer and three other US citizens nominated by the president and confirmed by the senate to investigate the entire question.
The Woman's Christian Temperance Union announces dates for its gatherings in Toronto. The Dominion convention will be held October 20 and 22, followed by the world convention from October 23 to 26 at the same venue.
Sovereign officers meet with delegates from Michigan Minnesota Wisconsin and Iowa in DusuguE Ia to elect delegates to the national meeting in St. Louis in March and to recommend legislation.
A blaze destroyed Menomonie high school with a $40,000 loss and the Stout manual training school, a 1908 gift of Senator Stout, carrying a $100,000 loss and $40,000 insured. The manual training school was highly regarded. students’ work had national exhibitions. Senator Stout vows reconstruction at once.
Cubanco February 8 Mayor Swift signed a general electric railway ordinance granting a 20 year franchise on several South Side streets including Wabash Avenue. The city will receive the largest compensation yet from a local street railroad averaging seven percent of gross receipts each year. The system will be underground and used exclusively.
In the house of commons the resolution of Mr A J Balfour providing state aid for voluntary schools was carried under closure by 25 to 110. It is estimated this will require a yearly appropriation of 3 025 009 dollars.

Judge Andrews ruled that baby shows fall under cruelty to children and refused to grant an injunction to restrain the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children from arresting the manager or interfering with the exhibition. The court held agents may intervene by arrest or order mothers to remove children from the hall.
The Swanhilde docked in San Francisco with Australian murderer Butler aboard after a 70 day voyage from Newcastle. Police say he killed 14 men by luring wealthy victims to inspect a mining claim before murdering them. His last victim was Captain Lee Weller. Butler stole money and clothing and fled under the alias Weller.
Five men are imprisoned deep underground after a blaze broke out at 10 a.m. in the Tamarack mine at Houghton Michigan. Firefighting attempts battle the inferno nearly a mile underground in shaft No 38 while fresh air is pumped to the trapped workers.
Council Bluffs Ia Feb 3 Judge Thornell appoints James B Patterson as receiver for Keystone Manufacturing Co Sterling Lis and Patterson’s brother named receiver for the Kansas City plant securing control of local affairs in a two site arrangement.
