A party from Stamford Connecticut arrived in Seattle and purchased the schooner Sunlight for a Copper River voyage. They plan to sail next Thursday with a snow sled powered by a 220 horsepower stern wheel engine, weighed about 70 tons, designed to grip ice with spike wheels and paddles for snow.
Colonel John Hilvevens of Minneapolis is appointed by Secretary of Agriculture Wilson as statistician for the department in Minnesota. He previously held the post under Harrison but was dismissed from the office.

Ashland Wis Feb 2 The Carnegie Oliver Mining Company which runs four large iron mines on the Gogebic range and employs about 1500 workers announces a 10 percent raise for all employees.
St Paul records show January 1890 with temperatures below zero and a low of 2 degrees below on New Year's Day. Snowfall measured 0.6 inches as the month stood out for extreme cold and light snow.
A sulphite mill digester explosion at the Park paper mills in Marinette Wisconsin wrecked a three story brick building. Two workers Peter Borst and Samuel Steffen were killed and Louis Lefebre of Menominee injured with a fractured skull. The cause was unknown as the night crew had just taken charge and the blast rattled the town.

A blaze in the fourth story of the reclaiming plant at the United States Rubber Company in Naugatuck Conn. destroyed most of the facility. The brick four story building, about 70 feet by 400 feet, suffered losses over 706000, largely covered by insurance. The plant was the nation's largest reclaiming operation and long deemed nearly fireproof.
A blizzard rages in Trinity Bay as many men are driven from an ice floe. With temperatures 20 below zero, fears echo the seven year old disaster that killed 40. A government rescue steamer is being dispatched to reach the endangered crew.

The thermometer dropped to 20 degrees in Ricu MonnD Virginia on February 2 as a blizzard raged in southwest Virginia and Newport News reported a 40 mile gale. No damage was reported from any point.
Hon. J. W. Griggs formerly New Jersey governor took the oath of office Tuesday and assumed charge of the attorney general position in Washington. He then attended the cabinet meeting during the morning hours.
