Milwaukee Feb 1 Six more arrests were made Sunday on indictments returned by the grand jury. Named are Ex Alderman Charles Cooke Henry G Razall stationery dealer Julius Feige Rudolph Fred Heiden Jr Adolph C Weisenborn and others. Also Charles Esau Albert G Meixner Albert C Bade were named with various counts. The grand jury so far has returned over fifty indictments.
Cincinnati February report on Franklin bank shows cashier Henry Burkhold 241000 short. Burkhold, removed months ago, is prostrated by the collapse and not expected to recover. President Kilgour says no prosecution and bank plus creditors will not lose. Burkhold has power of attorney to sell securities and settle affairs.
In St Louis on Sunday two city employees and a saloonkeeper were shot during a drink payment quarrel. James Gallagher was fatally wounded in the abdomen, Clem Scherhoof was shot in the abdomen, and George Maloney was shot through the jaw. Witness Jocenh Councell and Scherhoof arrested. Gallagher and the other employee remain hospitalized.
Des Moines detective Gordon Bowldy, who for two years pursued the unsolved murder of the Peterson children, killed himself by shooting through the head. The act followed his mounting despair over the case. Bowldy previously worked on the homicide and faced intense personal pressure.
In Point Pleasant West Virginia on February 1 a two family residence burned Sunday. A fifteen year old girl and a nine year old boy children of Frankeed were burned to death.
London reports confirm Mrs Florence Maybrick has been moved from Aylesbury prison though no pardon or public statement issued. US embassy says she remains a prisoner. rumours place her in Cornwall or a government detention home. Daily Mail claims she is in Liverpool with conditions avoiding public exposure and potential release within months. The unconfirmed note mentions travel to New York under assumed names.
Secretary Perry S Heath of the Republican National Committee says applications from newspaper publishers and editors for press platform space at the Chicago convention opening June 21 will be considered promptly. The press committee will meet in Chicago soon and respond after reviewing all requests. Heath notes no facilities have been arranged yet but intends to provide ample facilities for the entire press.
Secretary Root and his wife spent their final Washington evening dining with President Roosevelt at the White House. Later Taft, slated to assume Root’s post, visited with the president and Root to discuss Philippine affairs. Moody and Archbishop Ireland also met the president during the evening.
In Cincinnati on February 1 a mother, Mrs Matilda Garrity, learned her infant was dying. She then doused her clothes with coal oil and set herself ablaze. Both she and the infant died last night in what authorities label a self immolation tragedy.
In Jomacatepec Mexico on February 1 Pedro Alcazar a wealthy rancher shot and killed a police commander and two officers during a boundary fence dispute at his ranch. He escaped and remains at large.
The steamship Colorado of Wilton Line, en route from Hull to New York, collided with the Istol City line Boston City near Southwest spit. The Boston City suffered a large hole and steering-bridge damage and grounded to avoid sinking. the Colorado sustained minor damage and rescued crew from the Boston City before continuing to its dock. Weather was clear and both ships were moving slowly.
Bedford Indiana February 1 Ten days after the murder of Miss Sarah Schafer a Latin teacher at the high school police six detectives and twenty newspapermen have labored since the discovery of the body. Two suspects were arrested and released. detectives focus on Bedford's higher circles where two men are under suspicion. Authorities disagree on likelihood of arrest with public opinion split on guilt.
In Caracas on February 1 the full federal high court unanimously ruled that Warner and Quinlan of Syracuse hold no title to the Felicidad asphalt mine in Bermudez. The decision voids their claim to possession, rejecting the Bermudez concession as valid for that mine and noting Warner and Quinlan lacked proper title from vendors.
In Edwardsville Illinois a jury found Frank Greathouse guilty of murder in the June assault on Mrs Laura Bailey and her daughter Eliza of East Afton. The verdict ordered thirty years in the penitentiary. The mother died while the daughter survived the attack.
Roanoke Va February 1 Mrs George Shields and her three year old daughter Mildred were attacked in their home by an unknown black man and left for dead. They survive but doctors doubt recovery. No arrests or clues. Roanoke light infantry and Blues remain on guard awaiting capture or outbreak risk.
St Paul Feb 1 Thomas Welch a teamster died last night by taking strychnine. His seven year old daughter and a neighbor's child had bought the poison with money Welch took from his children's saving bank. He appeared to have planned the deed though no reason is given by family or neighbors.
Joplin Mo Feb 1 Two masked men robbed the Frisco depot at Granby of 100 dollars then exchanged shots with station agent William H Proadstreet who was fatally wounded. The robbers escaped as bloodhounds were sent from Joplin to the scene.
W A Blivens of Sioux City Ia arrived here en route to California and leaped before a switch engine. He was decapitated and it is believed he suddenly became insane.
Chicago February 1 The jury trying James Tilbery English coachman charged with attempting to blackmail Mrs Hollis M Thurston a West Side social figure returned a verdict of not guilty late Saturday night
A Sun report from Bogota claims Colombia plans an expedition against Panama with 10,000 troops within a month. General Rafael Reyes delays departure, citing ongoing talks with the State Department that may still be open, while Generals Nelisphina and Caballero sail for Barranquilla. Reyes denies involvement in any war plan and says U.S. talks could be reopened.
Washington February 1 The senate will continue talks on the Panama treaty with speeches planned by Republican Senator Fairbanks and Democratic Senators Clark and Clay. More debates may be postponed to wait for jury resolutions, while a possible executive session could be used to push the treaty to a vote. The party lines look set to widen the Republican majority with added Democratic support. The urgent deficiency bill may be reported, but canal matters will stay front and center for now.
Joseph Miller alias Meunier surrendered at police headquarters after admitting he stabbed Mrs. James Seville to death on Saturday. He claimed motive was belief she and her husband plotted to cheat him out of money and had considered poisoning her with arsenic mixed in sherry. He showed no remorse. Miller, once living in Manchester New Hampshire, had deserted his wife and had no prior police record.
Five rock men Morgan Jones John Mackey Joseph Janis Adam Savage and John Huderick were killed instantly when a powder explosion ripped apart a steel cage at the Maple Hill colliery of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron company in Mahanoy City Pennsylvania. The cage fell 300 feet to the shaft bottom and one head was blown off. Maple Hill is noted as well equipped and was visited by the anthracite strike commission.
A Southern railway passenger train derailed east of Princeton Indiana while traveling at twenty miles per hour. The baggage car and day coach were hurled from the rails and rolled down the embankment. Seventy five passengers escaped with slight injuries. investigators found missing spikes and bolts and claim a clue points to the guilty persons.
One fireman died and twenty five firefighters were overcome by smoke in a Sunday night fire at the American Manufacturing company storehouse in Brooklyn. Nine victims were taken to hospitals, with one expected to die. Property damage is estimated at twenty five thousand dollars.
In Pittsburg on February 1, work largely stopped at the Harwich mine after last week's explosion. The day was devoted to memorial services and funerals as a total of 152 bodies have been recovered and identified.

Pittsburg February 1 an explosion of natural gas in the cellar of Henry Magel s West Liberty home killed Henry Magel and Charles Magel and severely burned Mrs Magel. Six others including William Annie Otto and Charles Almasy were bruised. Neighbors could not reach Magel who perished beneath the debris as the house was wrecked by the blast.
In Webster Pennsylvania on February 1 a party of ten black men fired on white men who mocked them. Two white men, Robert Wilson and Robert Booth, were wounded, one fatally. A drowned black man, unnamed, followed a clash near the Monongahela river as relations between white residents led by Wilson and nearby black residents grew tense.
Fire in Hollandale destroyed every building except two dwellings, with losses estimated between $100,000 and $200,000. The blaze began in a negro restaurant and strong winds thwarted volunteer firefighters from stopping it.
Mexico City February 1. A number of men convicted as pickpockets were placed in the regular army to serve out their sentences. This marks the first use of the new law allowing compulsory military service instead of imprisonment for pocket picking offenses.
In St Louis on February 1 Miss Emma von Haaran aged fifty was found dead in her home at 426 South Fifteenth Street. The body showed she had frozen to death two weeks earlier after living as a recluse for over fifteen years in the large residence near downtown.
Los Angeles on February 1 US authorities arrested Peter Kokas also known as Pedro Caldaron and Jose Trupillo for obtaining transport for Indian buys to the Haskell school and selling it to Mexicans.
