Virgil A Stauble aged 33 died after slipping into a shaft at the Homestake gold mine in Lead South Dakota Friday night. The mine has seen five fatalities so far this year officials said.

The Associated Press reports a dry New Year weekend with fair to partly cloudy skies for most of the nation. Colder air moved into the lower Great Lakes and Atlantic Coast with freezing temps as far south as Jackson Mississippi. Birmingham registered 30 above zero.
In Ghent Minnesota a car driven by 21 year old William Ewing struck a parked gasoline truck after skidding out of control. Richard Allen Spoelma 19 of Marshall died from a broken neck in the incident. Ewing's injuries were not yet determined.
The 46th printing of the Iowa Official Register known as the red book was announced Saturday by Sherman W. Needham the state superintendent of printing.
The New Year holiday traffic toll rose at a much lower rate than Christmas weekend. By noon 30 highway deaths were reported versus 68 a week earlier, with the current toll at 34 after three fire deaths and another accident. States listed include New York six and Ohio four, among others. The National Safety Council projects 420 total motor-vehicle deaths by midnight Monday, a New Year period record.
The state highway program for early 1956 includes two underpasses and grading on the Austin Freeway Highway 252 part of a 37 million plan announced by Commissioner M. J. Hoffmann. Other Austin area projects cover bituminous surfacing on Highway 56 and widening on Highway 218. Police tightened traffic enforcement after a record holiday toll. A south Austin barn used for gas equipment and a square dance hall burned Friday night. Mayor C. R. Hansen owned the 36 by 50 foot two story building. Cause believed short circuit in wiring on the second floor used for dancing. Loss includes appliances, restaurant gear, records, sound system, and kitchen tools. Estimated replacement cost cited for records and equipment at about 1500 dollars. Rural fire truck crews from Albright and Probart fought the blaze near Highway 2188 outside city limits.
