Development of rail way car properties in 1910 shows little advance over 1909. New track totals 4,120 miles in 372 miles over the prior year. Block signal protected mileage reaches 69,331, up about 5,000. Freight cars drop to 41,381, with 3,381 passenger cars and 3,787 locomotives produced.
Washington Dec 30 Rhode Island has 608 persons to the square mile leading the census table. Minnesota follows with 25.7 per square mile while Nevada shows seven tenths per mile, occupying the lower end of the density list.
In White Earth North Dakota Charles Brown of Ross faces two charges one for violating the prohibition law and one for resisting an officer. Edgar Crowder and Andrew Burman were arrested for refusing to assist the sheriff who used the butt end of a revolver on Browns head to gain control. The trio will be tried in district court.
St Paul report shows 40 percent higher public school costs in the last year than four years prior. State disbursements ending July 21 totaled $13,724,437, compared with $9,820,737 for the year ending July 31, 1906.
Unofficial reports say the government was defrauded of over a million dollars in import duties at New Orleans through false weights and improper sugar grading. Conductors and trainmen on fifty lines around Chicago receive a flat 10 percent raise after negotiations lasting a month. The move covers about 76,000 members of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen and the Order of Railway Conductors and adds roughly $5 million annually in railroad costs. Canadian Northern crews are also affected, though they did not initially seek the raise.
In Appleton Wisconsin two major paper mill deals worth over 1.25 million dollars were announced with Minnesota capital showing interest. A large blaze in Fordville Walsh county caused about 35000 dollars in damage to mercantile establishments. Originating in Sorg hardware store the fire likely started from a small rear shop area. Authorities report extensive destruction across the rear section and adjacent businesses.
Washington, December 20. A letter from South Dakota State Railroad Commissioner George Rice to Senator Gamble condemns James D. Elliott for the federal judgeship. Rice notes Elliott has served as railroad attorney for 25 years and argues he is disqualified from rulings involving railroads. The letter accompanies Gamble’s endorsement of Elliott for the South Dakota district bench left vacant by John Emmett Carland’s transfer to the commerce court. The Rice correspondence is described as a torrid document.

Jamestown North Dakota reports the city gas plant wrecked by a Christmas Eve explosion will be rebuilt immediately. A new water gas system will be installed replacing the old method. The building carried $2,000 insurance and the loss is estimated at about $10,000 including lost revenues.
Philip Hurley district marshal of the Cincinnati fire department died after being wounded directing crews at the $2,000,000 blaze of December 21. His death is the fourth to result from the fire, an unexpected outcome following the incident.
Minneapolis market report lists wheat prices for December 29 with keepers for Dec, May, and July futures. On track prices show No 1 hard at 1.04, No 1 Northern at 1.03 to 1.04, No 2 Northern at 1.00 to 1.02, and No 3 Northern at 0.99 to 1.01, with cash grades for No 1 Northern and others.
In Duluth on December 30 traders noted wheat futures on track with No 1 hard at 1.05, No 1 Northern 1.04, No 2 Northern 1.01 to 1.02, December 1.03 and May 1.06. Flax futures also on track with December at 2.89 and May at 2.44.
St Paul cattle trade shows Good to choice steers at 5.00 to 5.75, fair to good 4.00 to 5.00, and cows and heifers 3.75 to 4.50. Veals bring 6.25 to 7.00. Hogs quoted at 7.50 to 7.65. Sheep offerers: wethers 3.00 to 8.75, yearlings 4.00 to 4.25, spring lambs 4.75 to 6.00.
Wheat figures show December at 93 1/4 to May 97 3/4 cents and July 93 3/4. Corn futures range Dec 47 1/4 to May 48 1/4 and July 49 3/4 cents. Oats decline with December 31 4/5, May 34 cents, July 34 1/2. Pork futures steady with January at 19.45 and May at 18.62. Butter and eggs quoted with creamery 23 29 cents, dairies 21 1/2, eggs 19 3/4. Poultry prices listed for turkeys 17 2 cents, chickens and springs 11 1/2 cents.

Lincoln dated dispatch states William J. Bryan told Albert J. Almoney of Baltimore he cannot attend the Jackson day celebration on January 17. Washington December 80 A new form of water power permit and new regulations for water power plants in national forests were approved by Secretary of Agriculture Wilson. The changes create a preliminary permit to protect the applicant during final surveys, set permits for fifty years, set charges from 10 cents to 1 dollar per horsepower over ten years, and include ten year readjustments. The fifty year total is about 30 percent lower than the old form, aiming to spur development while protecting public interests.
Des Moines sources report attorneys for Northwestern Great Western and St roads moved to Council 1 seeking a federal court injunction. The dispute concerns a proposed agreement reducing passenger and freight rates between Iowa points, with a railroad company ordered to implement changes by a specified date.
