Slaughter on Highways Sets Holiday Death Records

National Safety Council reports record traffic tolls during Christmas and New Year periods. Estimated 490 highway deaths from Friday 6 pm to Tuesday midnight, higher than the 407 New Year record. Combined holiday fatalities for Christmas and New Year hit 973, with a Christmas high of 706 traffic deaths and 884 total for the 102 hours.

Wisconsin Ties All Time High in Car Deaths

A 21 year old Darlington woman Doris Meier died in a crash two miles north of Darlington as Wisconsin tied its all time highway death toll of 932. The victim was a passenger in a car driven by Gerald Flesch of Ames Iowa who was hospitalized in critical condition. The collision involved a pickup truck and a milk truck stopped on Highway 3, officers said.

Gunfire and Bus Suspension Mark Integration Troubles

In Montgomery Alabama gunfire erupted as buses were integrated under a federal court order. A shotgun blast hit one bus and nine bullets struck another with four Negro passengers and a white driver aboard the first. In Tallahassee Florida the City Commission suspended Cities Transit Co franchise for efforts to integrate the bus system and police arrested the manager and nine drivers for operating without a franchise.

Powell claims Rayburn bent on purging him from offices

Rep. Adam Clayton Powell charges House Speaker Sam Rayburn blocked him from new offices as seniority entitled. Powell says Rayburn gave offices to Rep. Frank Chelf of Kentucky after Powell opposed the Democratic nominees, asserting a Negro purge. Powell supported Eisenhower on civil rights and remained a Democrat at the time.

First Mishaps Claim 89 Percent Of Fatal Crashes

Minnesota study of 679 drivers in 500 fatal crashes in 1955 shows 89 percent had their first mishap. The report notes fatalities occur even among drivers not known as accident prone. Among 76 repeaters, 41 had one prior crash and 16 had two. 10 had three or more. Prior violations varied with 26 having one, 21 having two, and 20 having three or more. one driver had 13 prior convictions and another eight accidents.

In North Mankato Minnesota the body of eight year old Diane Schuster was found on a sandbar in two feet of water after an all night search.
