Minnesota reports a grim holiday period with eight fatalities from traffic accidents and a nationwide travel surge as more than 7.1 million travelers press home. Slick roads and fog contributed to several crashes en route to Christmas destinations.
The Associated Press reports 512 Americans killed in Christmas weekend incidents through noon, including 424 in traffic and 27 in fires. Weather, drink driving and lengthy travel periods fuel surging fatalities, with officials warning of a potential record toll.
Ten year old George Lamb fell through thin Cedar River ice while bullhead hunting near the Weber home in Schleusner Addition. Police and rescuers found him submerged about 1 PM after an 11:30 AM emergency call. Chief George Roope also soaked while assisting. The boy is survived by mother Mrs Thomas Weber and siblings Andy Roy Linda.
Rescue teams reached the wreckage near Malga Bon in the Dolomites and radioed that all 21 aboard are dead. The victims include American Coca Cola representative Mr. Harris Gray Jr. of Greenwood Mississippi and his wife and two young daughters waiting in Milan for Christmas.
Everett, Washington nine year old Robert Rorbes Long tried to buy his mother a present. He was run over by a switching engine while collecting bottles in the Northern Pacific yards. He lost both legs but raised funds for the gift and for artificial limbs. his condition was critical but improving.
In Minneapolis Doctors Memorial Hospital a Christmas tree blaze killed seven people including Mary Stein 81. Infant David Rasmussen 13 days died later with congenital heart condition. Fire doors propped open fueled smoke. investigators will probe possible violations and past fire prevention orders as over 50 were evacuated and multiple survivors remained critical.
A procession of 1700 Christian Arabs from Israel crossed into Jordan for Yuletide visits to holy sites amid postwar tension. Most pilgrims came from Israel’s Arab communities with foreign attendees scarce. Jordanian authorities banned the Jerusalem Bethlehem route for diplomats, checkpoints and tense frontier scenes marked a cautious, subdued Christmastime.
Mrs Harold Halverson of 600 Myrtle won the first week's traffic safety slogan contest in Austin in cooperation with the Safety Council. Mahal ah McGilivray of LeRoy took second and Mrs Charles Storry of 810 Harmon third. More than 150 slogans were submitted. 13 honorable mentions were published.
Ossining N Y An overflow house at Sing Sing prison will sit down to Christmas dinner tomorrow prison officials said the population reaches 1938 an increase of 18 over the normal. The overflow stems from jail wardens shipping felons to Sing Sing before Christmas to save on holiday feast costs.
Minneapolis hospitals were asked to switch off their Christmas tree lights for the rest of the season after a fire at Doctors Memorial hospital began in a dry Christmas tree. Fire officials cited defective wiring as the likely cause, while a Northern States Power spokesman suggested heat from the lights could have ignited the tree.
Vice President Nixon declared international communism has suffered a mortal blow due to Hungarian sacrifices. He spoke at the airport on returning from Austria and promised to urge Eisenhower to help find homes for about 175,000 Hungarian refugees. He argued freedom fighters in Hungary proved communism’s reliance on force is unsustainable.
Mrs Thomas R Lawler aged 86 of Rochester a prominent community leader and widow of an early city funeral director died Sunday in Rochester Memorial Hospital The obituary notes her work with local charities and civic groups and her role in memorial services for city residents
Austin faced a weekend rash of traffic accidents on slippery streets but travel conditions are expected to be reasonably good state wide. Northern Minnesota still has some icy spots while southeastern areas report light snow and crews clearing hills curves and intersections. Temperature in Austin reached 20 degrees before noon.

An Austin man, William Newman, 38, lies in a Roseau Minnesota hospital in critical condition from a rifle wound. Dennis Gauthier, 16, shot him with a .16 gauge deer slug after allegedly threatening the shooter’s mother. Police report show Dennis acted to protect his mother as the situation escalated with the Gauthier children nearby. No charges have been filed while investigators review the case.
Tallahassee buses saw Negro riders seating from the front without disturbances as the boycott ended. Buses were less crowded with some empty due to holiday closings at state offices and students home for Christmas. Violence was discouraged by leaders who urged restraint.
Brockway Pennsylvania Louie H Franco reports Vernon F Taylor a Brockway native now in San Antonio known oilman donated about 50000 years ago to help build a park. He again gave a 100000 check for a new pool to be built at the park next summer for the kiddies.
