Washington December 21 news discusses Mr Olneys position on recognizing Cuba and the Cameron resolution. Cincinnati December 21 The Commercial Tribune quotes Senator Sherman asserting Congress may recognize Cuba’s independence if it passes a joint resolution and a presidential veto is overrideable by two thirds. Senator Davis of Minnesota contends Olney’s stance is untenable and that Congress can recognize Cuba by statute or joint resolution even against the president’s disapproval.
Washington dispatch reports Secretary Olney stating that if the Cameron Cuban resolution reaches final passage it will be a direct clash between executive and legislature. He calls the measure an expression of opinion in the Senate and says the House may render it another expression of opinion.
English comment debates U S stance on Cuba after Foreign Relations Committee actions. The Evening News argues recognition of rebels would provoke a strong nation, risking a quarrel with Spain. The Sun warns recognition could trigger Spain to declare war and decide its empire’s fate this year.
The Union States cruiser Brooklyn enters its first official voyage on Saturday leaving League Island. She will sail to Newport R I to take on torpedoes then to Brooklyn for a formal silver service presentation to the ship by the city's residents. After ceremonies she heads to Hampton Roads to join the Atlantic squadron.
Caracas reports indicate that Venezuela will ratify the Guiana boundary arbitration treaty with England negotiated by the United States. President Crespo is officially satisfied, governors of four states favor ratification, and Congress meets in February with near certainty of approval.
Wilmington December 21 The engagement is announced of Mrs Reynold Abraham Lewenhaupt widow of Count Lewenhaupt and Nellie Bayard youngest daughter of Ambassador Bayard to Maurice Hagren a young architect of Paris The ceremony will occur in Paris but no date is fixed Her former husband died two weeks after their wedding on April 2, 1891.
John P. Kunze longtime Cronin murder suspect nicknamed Cooney the Fox has been arrested in St. Joseph and sent to Leavenworth Kansas on charges of obtaining money under false pretenses. He allegedly bought the Hotel Imperial for 25000, paid 600 by check, and borrowed funds before fleeing without full repayment.
Ottawa report states Snetsinger the government candidate won the Cornwall seat by over 500 votes as the Manitoba school question dominated the campaign. In June the conservatives carried the county by over 300 majority.
Maprio Dec 21 A Spanish official telegraphs that Senor Dupuy de Lome relayed to Washington that President Cleveland will not recognize Cuban independence anytime soon. Weyler is ordered to hurry his campaign with a bold stroke to deter Cuban rallying after Maceo's death and to deprive the US of a pretext for intervention. Spain can mobilize up to 500,000 more troops and is expanding arms and ammunition production, while war officials vow to stand firm and claim victory if conflict comes.
A Commercial Tribune dispatch from Tampa reports Cuban insurgents under Gomez advancing in Matanzas province. Spanish garrisons desertions reach 150 and 200 men while officers escape. Battles near Estever see clashes with Spanish forces under Colonel Jose Nunez. Hospitals near Arena attacked and wounded killed.
Toreka Dec 21 The Children's Home society of Kansas will urge the new legislature to pass a law forbidding importation of New York City pauper criminals into Kansas. Over the last decade several thousand homeless waifs from New York have been dumped into the state.
O E Miller president of the Miller Hernia Treatment company testifies in the United States district court trial of three defendants. He admits kiting checks across Denver banks and accepts blame for the 1898 Commercial National Bank failure. He says his overdraft was 125000 and his own debt was actually 110000. He claims co defendants Charles H Dow and Sidney G McClarken had no involvement. If the bank officers are not convicted Miller could be acquitted as an accessory under common law.
San Francisco December 21 Attorney General Fitzgerald files a sensational demurrer in US circuit court in Southern Pacific company vs California board of railroad commissioners. He attacks the charter validity and the company’s right to operate branch lines. The suit seeks to halt the commission from enforcing grain rate cuts. Judge McKenna had earlier held 9 percent grain rate reductions unreasonable and extended a temporary injunction pending trial on the merits.
Pacific Mail steamer China will haul an enormous cotton cargo to China and Japan, leaving no room for other freights. A large flour consignment was refused. The Belgic, next to sail, is also engaged for cotton. Southern Pacific arranged a special deal with the line to handle these cargos. Previously Orient cotton moved via New Orleans as mills grew in Asia.
New York December 21 funeral services for ex-Congressman Roswell G Horr were conducted in Plainfield New Jersey with Rev Dr Robert Collyer delivering the funeral and praising his service to the country. The burial is planned for Wellington Ohio.
On December 21 in Gururie Oklahoma two months ago a group of 150 Kickapoo Indians obtained permission from Agent Thomas of the Sac and Fox agency to travel to the Wichita country for wood to build tepees. They have not been seen since, triggering a War Department search. It is believed the tribe may have gone to Mexico.
