The St. Louis Globe Democrat recounts a 1860s attempt to mine gold within city limits near a hill east of a park. miners struck tiny gold traces but yielded little, leaving them and locals laughing at the failed venture as they returned west.
Each year 800 to 1,200 couples travel from the continent to England for marriage. The bride goes first, stays a night in a hotel, and gives notice the next day. The groom then arrives and the ceremony is held, usually by license to avoid four weeks’ residence.
Rescue efforts continue as 100 to 260 miners are thought buried after a gas explosion at the Darr mine near Jacobs Creek Pennsylvania. Deaths mount with early bodies mutilated and few survivors reported amid large-scale recovery work.
At a brief session the Republican County Committee of New York refused to endorse Governor Charles E. Goldfield Nev December 20 mine owners will consider a proposal from Attorney O N Hilton for the Western Federation of Miners though compromise seems unlikely. Hilton offers concessions possibly removing some federation members while keeping miners at work. the owners insist on no amnesty for federation renunciation. General Funston has departed for San Francisco.
The Illinois Central stockholders meeting was postponed by order of Judge Ball until March 2. Stock transfer books will close the day before his decision in the injunction suit and stay closed until adjournment. Transfers of 281,231 shares remain subject to court inquiry of genuineness.
Count Witte has written to the court requesting the opportunity to testify as a witness. Kuropatkin testified that before the war he urged abandoning Port Arthur and returning the Kwangtung peninsula to China for 125.9 million dollars, arguing Port Dalny’s opening diminished Port Arthur’s strategic value.
In the U S House of Representatives John Sharp Williams of Mississippi and David A De Armond of Missouri dueled after adjournment. De Armond received a broken nose and Williams bled from the face as aides and colleagues separated the combatants on the floor.
Howard West alias Frank Earl was executed by electrocution in the Ohio penitentiary annex for killing William Legg a Sidney butcher during a shop robbery attempt. He faced death calmly.
The funeral for King Oscar, who died December 8, drew vast crowds in Stockholm. Mourners lined the palace to Ridarholm route as crepe hung from houses and flags, with about 2,000 in procession including Gustav the new king and foreign ambassadors. The dowager queen missed the ceremony due to illness, and a muffled, somber air prevailed in the city.
Eau Claire financiers J. T. Barber and Sumner G. Moon, indicted with Senator Borah on land fraud conspiracy charges, may be moved to Idaho for trial. Judge Quarles rules the indictment supports removal to the original jurisdiction court. Defendants may present evidence on conspiracy and reservation rights.
Manila reports the Philippine assembly passed its first bill, approving a 1,000,000 dollar appropriation to build schools across provinces. The measure passed unanimously as delegates also pursue tariff and shipping law changes, seeking free entry for certain goods and reciprocal tariff adjustments.
Christian H. Hauge, Norwegian minister to the United States, died during a snow shoeing trip in Christiania. He left alone in the morning expecting a return by afternoon. A searching party found his body in the road. Physicians failed to revive him. Death attributed to heart failure likely from overexertion. Hauge was on a three months leave in his native land.
