Turbulent reports describe fierce clashes outside the capital Panay amid a storm surge. Spanish forces advance on key routes as the city braces for impact and emergency measures are activated.
Dispatches from Iloilo say rebels attacked Panay island trenches on December 1 and suffered heavy losses as Spanish forces shelled the town. A Spanish account claims insurgents were slaughtered by machine guns during a failed assault on the retrenchment.
Masumoto Dec 12 reports the Asiatic squadron to gain added firepower as the Bennington heads to Guam to survey for a Mi station while Helena heads to Manila. Concord and Petrel patrol Chinese waters and mines may be used, signaling a reinforced force to uphold U S and British interests against insurgents and safeguard American coasts.

Norvok Virginia December 12 The transport Obdam landed at Fort Monroe in the afternoon with 70 sick and convalescent soldiers from Porto Rico and Cuba Forty of them belonged to the Fifth United States Infantry sent to the Jolwana Simpson hospital for care.
At noon the transport Saratoga carrying the First battalion of the Tenth Infantry departed Charleston bound for Cuba.

The four foot diameter pipe released millions of gallons, wrecking foundations, tearing down trolley and telegraph poles, and leaving several families homeless as buildings were deemed unsafe. Police estimate the damage around 500000 dollars.

Chicago rider Charles W. Miller, last year’s champion, won the six day race at Madison Square Garden beating his own world record by 24 miles and leading Frank Waller of Boston by 22 miles. Miller, ending in strong form, even attended a wedding held in the arena with about 7,000 to 10,000 spectators. He earned $500 from management and about $2,000 for the week.
In Lexington Kentucky on December 12 the State League of Tobacco Growers elected a state organizer to travel the state and form county leagues. The group vows to take active legal steps against the tobacco trust. the meeting marks the first since the league’s recent formation.
President Rafael Iglesias of Costa Rica departed New York aboard the steamship La Gascogne for France. He expressed pleasure at the cordial reception and plans to return in February for an extended tour of the country.

HOGS market steady to strong with prices 33.20 to 33.30. CATTLE market quiet with beeves selling from 3.200 to 5.10, stockers and feeders about 4.00 to 5.25, calves and yearlings 4.50 to 5.25 per hundredweight.
SouTao Paull reports cattle trading with prices from 2.40 to 4.60 for various categories. Fat cattle in strong demand while stockers are dull. ranges include stockers 2.50 to 3.60, heifers 2.50 to 4.60, cows 2.75 to 3.40, steers 4.01 to 4.50, bulls 2.40 to 2.75, calves 3.00 to 4.50.
Cuban war hero General Calixto Garcia head of the Cuban assembly commission to visit the United States died at the Hotel Raleigh in Wash ington after pneumonia from a cold and exposure. He left a large family and was mourned by officials including McKinley Hobart and several senators.
General Garcia devoted most of his life to Cuba’s liberty and fought against unequal odds for independence. Born October 14 1839 in Coguin near Santiago de Cuba he belonged to a distinguished family and was in his sixtieth year at his death.
The obituary notes novelist William Black born in 1891 in Glasgow studied art before turning to journalism then fiction. He worked with the Glasgow Weekly Citizen and The Daily News, published his first novel in 1867, and gained acclaim with Daughter of Heth in 1871.
