Extreme Tension Persists In St Petersburg City

The city remains quiet but tense with armed patrols in the streets, notably near the telegraph office. Mail delivery continues as mail accumulation grows and Count Witte weighs possible outcomes of universal suffrage and a potential constitutional proclamation or dictatorship option.

Crawford Executed Lundeen Hanged At Elk River Minn

In Elk River Minnesota on December 6 C D Crawford murderer of Heine Lundeen was hanged after a failed first attempt by Sheriff Ward. Sheriff Bernick of St Cloud completed the hanging. About thirty witnesses attended with no defense counsel present. Crawford and George Palmer had robbed harvest hands in a boxcar on November 20 1904 and Crawford killed Lundeen who slept during the robbery. Both men were arrested 36 hours later and Crawford was convicted of first degree murder while Palmer received a penitentiary term.

Williams pleads guilty in deadly Indiana family case

William McWilliams pleaded guilty in Independence Indiana on three indictments for killing his wife and five children. A judge will sentence him Friday. Experts say he shows no signs of insanity and he has expressed a wish to end his life while under guard. In Chicago a city council session saw a double reverse for Mayor Dunne as aldermen rejected his gas rate policy and his traction plan.

Balfour resigns as Premier with Campbell-Bannerman to form new government

Arthur J. Balfour formally offers his cabinet’s resignations to King Edward. Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman is invited to form a new cabinet and is expected to accept, with a Liberal-led government to be formed within hours or days. Possible appointments include Morley to Indian affairs and Asquith as chancellor, with discussions on home rule for Ireland shaping the leadership lineup.
