Army engineers reassured Chippewa Falls residents as flood water under the ice lowers the river across the gorge about eighteen miles. The backwater and regaining ice keep the gorge intact, with no imminent danger and only localized damage to flooded areas and the Chippewa Logging and Boom mill threat to a nearby wagon bridge.
S J Collins general superintendent Wisconsin Central reports Chippewa River bed from Eau Claire to Chippewa Falls frozen with logs ice and driftwood for 15 miles and predicts it will stay until spring. Water runs on both sides of the old channel. He says merchants face inconvenience but no property damage. goods moved and no merchandise or buildings damaged. Water height is three feet lower than in 1894.
Washington December 4 The Holy Father sorrowful over US agitation from alleged Rome dispatches about actions against US prelates and Catholic university professors. Rampolli’s note to Mgr Martinelli urges an authoritative denial of the falsehoods as reprehensible maneuverings.
A blast at the Lake Wood water plant eight miles from Duluth used a hundred pounds of dynamite. The explosion occurred in the morning and shook houses for miles, but no injuries were reported.
Eugene W. Harrington deputy city comptroller was arrested on grand larceny charges after an investigation found he had been stuffing a payroll. He is a relative of Mayor Jewitt.
Dickinson North Dakota December 4 sheriff Lish arrested F E Perry wanted at Medora on the charge of defaulting while agent for the Northern Pacific.
Three highwaymen with withdrawn revolvers robbed the Home Brewing company office in St. Louis at 3 p.m. They looted $500 to $800 from the cash drawer and safe while forcing about a dozen people including the cashier Robert Haverkamp to lie and stand with hands bound for ten minutes. They warned victims not to noise, then fled.
A Lexington dispatch reports a revolver fight between the Morgan and Harrison families in Letcher County, Kentucky. Elder William Morgan is killed and his three sons Thomas Caleb and John suffer serious wounds while both Harrison brothers Jim and Henry die and a Morgan son dies later. The feud tied to recent congressional elections.
Federal officers will arrest the Marshalltown Iowa Soldiers' Home officers and trustees for a misdemeanor against the federal government by diverting soldiers pensions. They will appear before Judge Woolworth for trial based on evidence from Special Agent Gray. The case grew from the home’s policy of forcing inmates to turn over pension funds above six dollars per month.
A Chicago Rock Island and Pacific freight collided with a special train near Brooklyn Iowa on December 4. Engineer James Dyer of Davenport was killed and several crew members were seriously injured. Both engines and 25 cars were wrecked. The wreck was caused by a mistake by operator Howell at Grinnell.
Ernest Godfrey of Emlenton Pennsylvania fell through thin ice while skating on a lake. Arthur Palmer of Montezuma Ohio attempted a rescue but both men perished when the ice collapsed beneath them.

Grantsburg Wisconsin December 4 The St Paul and Duluth railway reports new steel work on its branch from the St Croix river to Grantsburg with plans to install 800000 dollars worth of heavy rails on its main line next season.
Was Short and Disappeared Exnamra New York December 4. Upton Lovejoy Jr cashier of the state reformatory here disappeared two weeks ago. An examination of his accounts reveals a shortage of 1800 dollars. His friends fear he may have taken his own life.

The World dispatch from New York on December 4 notes Fitzhugh Lee Jr, son of the consul general, observed the Competitor crew and correspondent Melton. The Americans jailed reportedly spoke with the consul's representative for about thirty minutes, and all except Melton are said to be well and as cheerful as circumstances permit.
New York reports confirmation from Cuba that Major General Serafin Sanchez inspector general of the insurgent army was killed in action at Las Demas Santa Clarence on November 20.

Washington December 4 The president issued a proclamation suspending the act that relieved German vessels from tonnage dues and other charges. Beginning January 8 German ships entering U S ports must pay dues on a sliding scale of 6 to 80 cents per ton per year. The move reimposes the same tonnage charges on German vessels as for Great Britain and other nations.
In Huron South Dakota the supreme court under Fuller voids all warrants issued for capital purposes in Shannon and Longstaff v City of Huron, potentially wiping out about $150,000 of city indebtedness. Pierre and Watertown may convert warrants into bonds, but only if bonds are issued to retire the invalid warrants.
