Vessel Owen Believed Sunk With 19 Onboard Off Apostle Islands

Chicago dispatch reports the steel steamer Ira H Owen with nineteen aboard is presumed lost after distress signals were seen near Outer Island in Lake Superior. The wreckage and life preservers bearing the ship name were found twelve miles east of Michigan Island. Captain Mulligan and Captain Honner led a veteran crew on the 1888 Cleveland built vessel, insured for $100,000 with barley cargo.

Mobile December 2 A pullboat on the Middle river burned during the day killing nine men. Sidney Wheat the negro steward survived, awake due to illness, escaping as the vessel collapsed. Stewart & Butt owners say the boat had no steam for three days and cannot explain the blaze.

Chicago December 2 Representatives from Chicago Wisconsin Michigan Minnesota Northwestern Illinois Purdue Iowa and other Big Nine schools met to protest high admission prices for intercollegiate football games and passed a resolution capping prices at 50 cents. The conference organized for the year elected officers and announced the next track meet will be at Northwestern on June 2 A Wisconsin professor pushed a new rule requiring athletes to have sufficient credits to attend the college of arts and letters, with certificates of study and course records.
