Cuban Refugee Airlift Begins In One Of Historys Largest

Cuban refugees start streaming into the United States in a large airlift arranged by U S Cuban authorities. The first flight from Varadero to Miami carried 93 refugees and daily service is planned with 1 000 weekly arrivals expected next week, then two flights daily after that. Flights will run to multiple cities with Sundays and possibly Saturdays off.

Garrity Found Guilty of Swindling Austin Woman

James Joseph Garrity, 25, without a permanent address, was convicted by an Olmsted County District Court jury of swindling Austin resident Mrs. Marie Torgerson out of 1500 dollars. The two-day trial, moved to Rochester on venue, concluded after the jury deliberated from 11:38 a.m. to 5:05 p.m. with Garrity sentenced to up to five years in jail.

DFL Leader Attacks Conservatives Over Inert Reapportionment

Minneapolis reports the DFL chairman George Farr blasted Conservative control of both houses for not agreeing with Governor Rolvaag on a special session for reapportionment. The state banking commissioner role in Minnesota is vacant after John D. Chisholm’s resignation took effect. Gov. Karl Rolvaag has not named a successor to the $12,500 a year position. Chisholm, 50, had been appointed April 9, 1964, and said on October 8 he would return to banking in Rochester.
