A great disaster is reported from Nepal as the Baghmati and Vishnumati rivers burst their banks causing landslides in Kathmandu valley. Cities of Bhatgaon and Patna suffer heavy damage and several hundred persons are reported killed.
The Daily Telegraph publishes a significant editorial declaring the negro issue a more urgent problem for the Anglo Saxon race than yellow danger. It attacks emancipation ideals and argues electoral equality is a delusion while noting American Negro franchise as a farce. The piece asks about the future fate of the black population in South Africa.
Gov. White orders the Second Regiment of the West Virginia National Guard to the New River district to protect life and property amid a miners strike. A skirmish near Thurmond involved about twenty shots. no injuries reported. Guards will be stationed at Rush Run as mining operations continue on a small scale.
In Bluefield West Virginia the shooting at Crane creek and Simmons creek leaves John Ruble a Sagamore Coal and Coke blacksmith dead after being shot by strikers while guarding with Barney Shumate. Shumate fired back as miners fled and no arrests have been made as guards are rushed in to protect workers.
Tamaqua Pennsylvania reports a day of intense excitement in the Panther Creek valley ends with Company K Twelfth Regiment and Captain Heim escorting nonunion men to Lansford Summit Hill and Coaldale. Nearby crowds remain nonhostile as the Second battalion may be ordered from Shenandoah if conditions do not improve. Colonel Clement enforces a new state law penalizing obscene names.
Twelve loaded freight cars collapsed through a bridge near Kemper Illinois on the Chicago Burlington and Quincy line. Three tramps are believed dead under wreckage while a St. Louis fruit shipment passenger was severely cut. The high speed crossing caused a wheel flange break.
Chicago reporters note that Western Union Telegraph will hire no more boys as messengers in the city after three strikes in a month. Girls will carry messages in business and residence districts, with men handling night work and daytime routes in less desirable areas. The change takes effect immediately.
A fatal wreck on the Iron Mountain branch between Wagoner and Fort Gibson I. T. occurred when a heavily loaded freight train struck a construction train at mealtime. Two men were killed outright and fifteen others injured. some may die. No names were obtainable.
In Yankton South Dakota Mr and Mrs N M Davis parents of the late Senator Cushman K Davis of Minnesota celebrated their sixty fifth wedding anniversary Mr Davis is nearly ninety two and his wife eighty eight both are in good health.

A Times dispatch from Pretoria reports strong protest against raising mine taxes to fund the war effort. It notes Joseph Chamberlain's plan to extract up to 500 million dollars from colonies, while stressing the Transvaal’s lack of surplus and reliance on a single industry.
Shanghai cabled report says provincial governors in China tax the people and siphon indemnity funds into loans for personal use. The Chekiang governor secured a 140000 dollar loan from an American bank at Shanghai claiming revenue board difficulties and asked the bank to inform the American minister to China.
In Humacao on Tuesday a political riot left three people dead and three seriously wounded while several others were injured. Hundreds of shots were fired as peaceful citizens faced the disturbance, causing islandwide excitement. An attempted assassination of American Federation of Labor representatives occurred Sunday in Mayaguez.
West bound Queen and Crescent passenger train derailed after striking a tree blown across the track three miles west of Jackson Mississippi. Fireman Brunston was killed and Engineer John Jones fatally injured. Three mail clerks bruised and sixty five passengers shaken. traffic suspended for hours.
La Paz August 29 the government submitted proposals to Congress seeking adoption of a gold standard at 20 pence per sucre and payment of customs in gold at the same rate, plus abolition of the export duty on silver.
The cholera epidemic in the Orient grows worse with hundreds dying daily across Java Hong Kong Tientsin and China regions. Victims include both locals and Europeans as the disease spreads to coasts and interiors.

Rome Aug. 29 Mer Guidi has been appointed apostolic delegate in the Philippines. He is to hasten his departure to Manila after Vatican reports on a Schismatic Catholic church in the islands. The Vatican downplays the movement saying it cannot develop under leaders whose sole reason is a supposed break with the Catholic church.
