Pottsville Aug 25 A collision on the Pittsburg and Western at Valencia 22 miles west of here involves three trains local freight No 1 through freight No 25 and eastbound passenger No 14 from Chicago. Twenty five persons seriously injured five likely to die. Passengers and crew describe a violent derailment with oil tubing hurled among cars.
The 30th Grand Army of the Republic general assembly in St Paul runs Aug 31 to Sept 4 with city illumination parades receptions at the capitol, Hotel Ryan, and various venues. Activities include naval veterans parade, campfires, reunions, regatta, national encampment events, and extensive unofficial programs.
Battiners Aug 25. James J. Corbett answers a San Francisco telegram proposing a lease so Sharkey could obtain a chance to fight Fitzsimmons before Corbett’s Sharkey bout. Corbett says he will not consider any such proposition until he meets Sharkey. If Fitzsimmons wants a fight, Corbett is ready to meet him in weeks or less. After that, Fitzsimmons can pursue further bouts.
Representatives of James J. Corbett and Sharkey met in New York on August 25 to discuss plans for a bout. No decision was reached and action was postponed until Thursday when another meeting is to be held with Corbett expected to attend.
Reports from Fort Smith Arkansas indicate rising tensions in the Choctaw Nation over Green McCurtain's election. Guards protect a Smith residence as fear of armed conflict grows with competing Burrard faction supporters alleged to have caused displacement and casualties. A northbound Frisco report claims McCurtain has been killed.
In Washington at Gray Gables President Cleveland announced the appointment of David R. Francis, former Missouri governor, to be secretary of the interior replacing Hoke Smith who resigned over financial views. Francis is expected to assume office September 1.
An old fashioned camp meeting near Pawnee, Perry Territory attracts hundreds of Indians. The religious fever runs high as participants shout and dance all night, leaving many exhausted and occasionally fainting for hours before restoration.
Acting Commissioner of Indian Affairs Smith awards contracts for school buildings at Rosebud and Pine Ridge agencies. Owen H. Hill of Minneapolis lands Rosebud bid at 416,525 dollars and Pine Ridge bid at 44,766 dollars.
MELLETTE Aug 25 Professor Wheaton of Brookings college reports creameries rapidly multiplying in the state. There are 117 in active operation now, up from 90 at this time last year.
Washington on August 25 reports that ex-Governor Francis of Missouri was chosen to succeed Mr. Smith as secretary of the interior. Francis, a long-time Cleveland ally, is described as vigorous, popular, and wealthy with a florid complexion and sandy hair. The selection follows Smith’s retirement and reflects strategic balance among regions and money policy.
Mr and Mrs Bryan visited Kinastox New York Aug 25 staying as guests of Chairman Hinkley of the Democratic state committee. The tour from Upper Red Hook drew crowds at Rhinecliffe Kingston Phoenecia Allabea Shandaken and Big Indian where Bryan spoke briefly to locals before continuing to the lodge. He quipped about goldbugs and lunatics then greeted host Major Hinkley and Public Printer Thomas Benedict of Washington.
The resignation of Secretary Hoke Smith will take effect Sept. 1. He plans to leave on Monday for Lincolnton, North Carolina to spend a few days with his family, then return to Atlanta to resume his law practice.
News from Turnarick Labrador says the steamship Hope commanded by Lieutenant Peary arrived July 20. The expedition team conducted scientific observations and then sailed toward the Arctic Ocean. Peary reported many icebergs along the coast.
Farco North Dakota August 25 attorneys contend the state game law is invalid. The act bans hunting except on set dates but lacks a punishment provision, making prosecutions unlikely and licenses money wasted.

The steamer Al Ki arrived in Seattle with about 75 miners from Cook's Inlet. Captain Patterson reported they spoke of hardship, returning without riches. One man carried $5 in gold dust that he said cost him $500 to obtain.
A Madison dispatch reports the supreme court clerk filed a stipulation dismissing the Krusska suit testing the last legislature’s apportionment without costs to either side. The action was brought by Michael Krusska and others to challenge the legality of the redistricting plan.
A prize bout on a barge on the St Louis river saw Mose Jackson of Duluth defeat C H Wheeler of St Paul in the seventh round by a short arm punch under the right ear. About 50 sports spectators attended.
At Saratoga Aug 25 a tense state Republican scene unfolds as Thomas C Platt faces pressure to run. He maintains he has not changed his stance while allies push Scatcherd for lieutenant governor. A possible Platt acceptance could still avoid a party breach but likely not yield unanimous backing, with some New York members threatening to vote against him triggering a ballot.

CubicaGeo Aug 25 Senator Jones head of the Democratic national committee dismissed an Atlanta dispatch report alleging Senator Tillman offered a Bryan cabinet post to Mr. Watson in exchange for withdrawing from the vice presidential case. He called the claim unauthorized and without foundation.

Canvo North Dakota reports twenty three work horses stolen during the night from the barn of J G Parson. The sheriff and posse are in hot pursuit.
In the Western League at St Paul Minneapolis Detroit Grand Rapids Indianapolis and Columbus results show Detroit sweeping Grand Rapids while Minneapolis and Indianapolis lead standings. In the National League Boston Pittsburg New York Louisville Brooklyn Chicago and others compete with Baltimore Cincinnati and Cleveland atop the table and New York and Philadelphia mid-pack.
The Brooklyn cruiser recorded an 88 knot round trip at 20.97 knots per hour in a forced draught trial over the official course. The contract sets 20 knots for four hours, with $50,000 premium for each quarter knot above target. Officials expect 21.14 knots on official trials, potentially yielding a $300,000 bonus for the builders, the Cramps.
