Merrill Ring Co, a large Duluth lumber plant operator and Toledo yard owner, asks creditors to meet at the Auditorium hotel in Chicago on August 25 to plan saving assets from sacrifice and paying obligations in full. Liabilities are about 900000 with assets around 2200000, caused by illiquidity and maturing short term paper.
Turkish legation reports a communication from the Sublime Porte declaring that a large number of Jewish families from Russia now in the United States intend to settle in Turkey, and that access to the empire is expressly forbidden to Jewish emigrants.
D. D. Miremenn Aug 22 reports John B. Hanten of the national Democratic sound money committee issues a call for a mass meeting at Sioux Falls on Aug 27. The gathering aims to elect delegates and eight alternates to the Indianapolis gold Democratic convention and set a date for a state convention.

Wesster City, Aug 22 Chris Sanders shot two women Miss Stackhouse and Miss Belle Smith, believing their large sleeve dresses made them birds. He fired two barrels from his shotgun but the birdshot caused only minor injuries and was easily removed. Sanders was confined to Independence insane asylum.
Aberdeen August 22. T I Hurd land and colonization agent of the Soo road arrives with William Pearce of Calgary then begins extended overland journey west of the Soo terminus at Klum North Dakota to inspect resources for potential fullest settlement. If report is favorable Soo may extend to the Missouri and iron the grade from Ashley junction to Aberdeen.
Butte Montana August 22 Harry N Wing bookkeeper at the State Savings bank arrested on embezzling five thousand four hundred eight dollars from the bank. Wing a young man with wife and child has long bank service and high standing. It is alleged he committed a similar crime eight years ago in Minneapolis.
Farno North Dakota August 22 Myron R Kent alias William Wiley Pancoast twice convicted of murdering his wife at Mandan three years ago appeared before Judge W Bb McConnell and the court fixed November 12 at 2 pm for his execution.
Willmar Minnesota residents discuss a bold night robbery. Authorities say the bandit gang secured jewelry watches and money from several victims. Early reports estimate the takings ranged from five hundred to eight hundred dollars, with more possible.
At St Paul on August 22 the Soo railroad battles rivals over G. A. R. rates. The Soo slashes fares from Atlantic seaboard points to the G. A. R. encampment by about five dollars from Boston and other Eastern cities. Nearby Soo points also gain from the rate cuts.
Kansas City Aug 22 The Times reports fusion between Democrats and Populists in Missouri looks unlikely. Democratic central committee chairman Cook was asked to gauge Populist demands but the Missouri wing in control resists fusion, compromise, or any move aiding free silver. No reasonable offer has come from the Populist state committee and no belief of consent remains.
