Four people died and several injured when Frisco Kansas City Florida Special wrecked near Marked Tree Arkansas. Victims include Edith Rinker 25 from Macon Georgia Glen Rinker her son Patricia Crawford of Kansas City Kansas and train chef William Richards 56 of Bonner Springs Kansas. Sleeping car derailed struck two freight cars on a siding.
A New York court martial found Sgt James C Gallagher of Brooklyn guilty of unpremeditated murder of two POWs in a Chinese camp in Korea. He was also found guilty of mistreatment and informing on prisoners and collaborating with Chinese Reds. He was found innocent of killing a third prisoner and of advising Chinese to shoot another. The verdict followed nearly five hours of deliberation.
Secretary of Defense Wilson ordered the new code of military honor posted by every unit ship and post worldwide and urged rapid planning for training to resist capture and torture. He directed the three services to develop indoctrination plans with civilian and government support to dispel fear of Communist tactics.
The Soviet Union accepted Chancellor Konrad Adenauer's proposals to discuss German unification and war prisoners during his Moscow visit. Talks with Kremlin leaders are set to begin on Sept 9, with no topics excluded, per the government press office. The note was delivered to the West German Embassy in Paris.
La Crosse County police investigate the death of Stanley L. Grubb aged 63 of Los Angeles whose body was discovered along a highway. Grubb worked as a railroad gang worker. Local authorities pursue leads as no immediate cause of death is announced.
Fairmont Minnesota surveys show a healthy pheasant supply for the 16 day hunting season starting October 22. Maynard Nelson notes an average of nine birds per mile in Martin and Watonwan counties, with Jackson County yielding up to 12 pheasants per mile, about three times last year. Cock pheasants allowed three per day and six in possession.
Richard Carpenter, 26, captured after a 23 hour terror spree that killed one officer and wounded another. Officers fired tear gas as Carpenter, unarmed, surrendered but was dragged from a third floor apartment by Detectives Zuley and Kennedy after a fierce struggle.
Governor Freeman called the district court decision invalidating the state reorganization act a serious setback. He spoke after a Scandinavia and Turkey tour and said a special session could be possible if the Minnesota Supreme Court upholds the ruling. Freeman defended the act’s intent and noted he plans reelection unless deterred by Father Time.
The Austin Utilities Department bans lawn sprinkling from 4 to 8 p m daily except Sundays to conserve water amid a heat wave. Supt Harold J Lamon appeals for voluntary compliance and notes the move aims to reserve water for fire protection and maintain pressure. Recent daily usage tops 6.3 million gallons.

At least 22 dead, widespread power cuts, ruined roads, and emergency declarations hit cities including Scranton Tamaqua as water mains burst and hospitals faced supply shortages.
Two Mower County school districts will vote on consolidating with Dist. 27 in Austin this Saturday. Polls in Dist. 128 run 6 30 to 8 30 p m and Dist. 23 polls 4 to 8 p m. Voters decide consolidation and assuming a share of Dist. 27 indebtedness since January 1, 1952. All residents eligible to vote in a regular school election may cast ballots.
The region braces for a heat wave with highs near 95 to 100 degrees and forecasts predicting temperatures eight degrees above normal for the five day period. Northeast Minnesota also swelters with 90 to 95 degree highs as retailers report Bermuda shorts sold out.
President Eisenhower announced an immediate 50 per cent tariff increase on all imported bicycles to shield U.S. producers from serious injury. The action boosts duties on large wheel lightweight models from 7 to 11 per cent and on all other imported bikes from 15 to 22 per cent of value. Most bicycles originate from Great Britain West Germany Austria France Belgium the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
