Opens Wednesday August 20 as every package offers 25 sheets of linen note paper and 25 envelopes free to the buyer. Each package, possibly a 5 or 6 dollar value, contains new dress goods and accessories. Special: all colored shirt waists half price and white waists 25 percent off the marked price, with summer goods half price.
Washington reports that Tariff Expert T. S. Sharretts signed a tariff treaty with China on the 15th to open interior markets and abolish the likin tax for American goods. The dispatch from Shanghai notes no further treaty details.
Colonel William A. Hemphill, once mayor of Atlanta and founder of the Atlanta Constitution, died suddenly at home. Born May 15, 1842 in Athens, he served in the Confederate army, helped build the Constitution, and led multiple local institutions. He leaves a widow, two sons, and three daughters.
A Chicago and Erie freight train on the Chicago and Western Indiana line was struck by a special excursion train carrying 600 from Cincinnati. The impact crushed the caboose and killed George W. Farris 21 of Cave City Kentucky instantly. His brother Daniel E. Farris 28 was fatally injured.
St Louis reports two fatal street car crashes. Charles Bronson, a grade foreman, was killed crossing Olive Street track. A picnic wagon of eighteen was struck on Page Avenue. Harry King, 18, died. Katie Brown, 16, fatally injured. Patrick Brown, 16, seriously hurt. The remaining passengers sustained minor injuries.

They killed the chief engineer and wounded the captain, the mate, the second engineer, and a passenger, all Spaniards. Native constabulary fired on the crew, killing three. Twenty five crew surrendered. five leapt overboard and are thought drowned as the steamer ran aground during the fighting but was later refloated.
Manila reports the Moro insurrection in Mindanao nears a critical point as American troops are expected to strike Bacolod after a clash at Camp Vickers where two Twenty-seventh Infantry men were killed and another wounded. General Chaffee urges decisive action to win Moro support.
In the South Atlantic storm off South Africa two British barks were lost the Highfields and Brutus with crews. The Highfields sank almost immediately leaving 23 sailors drowned while Captain Dunham, ten seamen and one officer clung to the bridge. Rescue followed after six hours at sea. City of Lincoln ashore and Kaiser damaged in the same gale.
General Jean Jumeau’s Firminist troops defeat General Alexis Nord’s provisional army at St Michael and burn the town before advancing toward St Raphael. The Crete a Pierrot cruiser lands more troops near Cape Haytien to reinforce General Salmare's forces ahead of further attacks.
A severe electrical storm swept southern Georgia causing multiple structural hits. The Air Line railroad roundhouse at Stillmore was destroyed, a dwelling fell at Waynesboro with one death, and buildings at Bartow and Swennsboro were struck or burned. Cotton crops were ruined across the region, signaling heavy losses.
The viceroy of Bzechuan reports Imperial troops stormed the rebel headquarters at Inchafan on August 12. About a thousand rebels were killed and their leader Tong Yu Hung was captured and executed.
Indianapolis August 18 President John Mitchell of the United Mine Workers arrived en route to Springdale to visit family and confer with Illinois leaders. He says the strike remains unchanged and will end only when operators act. He notes continued financial relief and faith the men will win.
The forty-eighth International Typographical Union convention adjourned after six days. Reports were adopted and resolutions praised McKinley’s assassination and denounced anarchy. A telegram from President John Mitchell urged union support for the coal strike, and the body voted to send $2000 to Mitchell. A referendum on a per capita assessment and two proposals to support the Typographical Journal were also submitted.
The Toledo Blade notes that paper coal is a form of lignite discovered near Bonn Germany. It naturally splits into films as thin as paper and could impact industrial uses.
