Cleve-Lane Aug 17 Major McKinley and Chairman Hanna met in Hanna's home and discussed the campaign. Hanna praised progress and education work noting over 15,000,000 documents mailed from Chicago. He said McKinley would not take the stump. no Milwaukee stump visit planned. campaign to begin in about 10 days.
A violent cyclone hit Serva Alabama Perry County near Aliceville on August 17 killing twelve Negroes and three Whites as houses collapsed. Ten others injured as barns crushed horses and mules. Heavy rain followed, washing out crops and causing major losses to planters.
A strong gale passed over Florence Alabama around 5 p m causing two houses to collapse and extensive damage to chimneys and trees. No fatalities reported though injuries not specified. Authorities survey aftermath and assess extended damage to area.
A Buffalo fire truck responding to an alarm collided with a trolley car at Waltz avenue and Sycamore street. All crew members on the truck were injured. one fireman died, another severely injured, and the motorman of the trolley perished. The wreck left the motor car demolished and the scene marked by a fatal, high impact crash.
At the bottom of the St Clair River near Grosse Pointe lightship around midnight Aug. 17, the steamers Chisholm and Oceanic collided. Both ships are at the river bottom, crews are safe, four passengers from the Chisholm were landed but talked little. Oceanic remains under water, while the Chisholm stern shows at the surface and her captain was aboard after the crash.
At 10 a m a light strike set off an explosion causing damage to a 36 barrel oil tank on a farm three miles south of here. The tanks are owned by the Standard Oil company. The incident damaged several tanks in a group of big tanks and is expected to cost about 75000 in losses.
Partanburg S C Aug 17 Cap Blassingame a respected citizen was shot and killed by a Negro boy who had entered his home to commit a robbery. The assailant fled after the fatal pistol blast and authorities are pursuing him.
In Invincton New York on August 17 Mr Bryan, guest of Mr Walker, denied clashes with Senator Jones over the national headquarters. He said he favored Chicago but did not demand it, and national leaders including Governor Stone Sewall Jones and Altgeld chose the Western city. Washington would have a branch and Senator Gorman would contribute there. His vacation plans include speeches in Buffalo Erie Cleveland Baltimore and St Louis.
Lord Russell of Killowen, lord chief justice of Great Britain, reaches New York with Lady Russell and daughters aboard the Cunard steamer Umbria from Queenstown. He travels at the invitation of the American Bar association to speak on International Law, Aug. 20, at Thorwood in Dobbs Ferry, hosted by Henry Villard.
Cusab brothers of Walkerton build an air ship at Ligonier consisting of a cigar shaped balloon 15 feet long and 4 feet in diameter with a 5 foot long car beneath. A gas making battery will be in the car to supply continuous gas. One rear propeller and two front propellers will power the craft for public tests with hopes of aerial navigation.
Wabash Screen Door Works, a leading Wabash manufacturing firm with a 1000 doors per day capacity, will relocate its factory from Wabash to Rhinelander Wisconsin next week. John Bruner of Wabash is president. The Rhinelander plant will be enlarged to combine near timber supplies, while an office remains in Wabash.
A stock train heading east on the Chicago and Grand Trunk was boarded at Bellevue 30 miles west of Detroit by four masked armed men. The robbers forced the two attendants to surrender cash and small valuables.
Washington notes reveal Senator Jones and Senator Faulkner selecting Chicago as the Democratic national committee headquarters with a Washington branch. The campaign staff includes John R. McLean, Daniel J. Campau, F. Johnson, Clark Howell, Bradley B. Smalley, and Thomas Gahan, plus J. L. Norris as assistant treasurer.
The Populist party’s 1896 campaign handbook has just issued from The Silver Knight presses. The 313 page book is copyrighted by the publishing company and centers entirely on money, setting it apart from older party handbooks that covered broader topics.
Washington report says Senator Gorman declines the chair and leaders back Governor Stone with Mr Bryan also said to favor Missouri's ex governor. The shift marks a preference among party leaders for the top national post.

Wichita Aug 17 Populist ex Governor Lewelling after losing the gubernatorial nomination to John W Leedy is now being considered for a United States senatorship as supporters push his campaign forward with state and party backing.
A brief, quotelike item from the Detroit Free Press notes a witticism about Mrs Wester and her daughter. The remark compares the daughter’s status to royalty after a marriage to a cattle king, reflecting local humor.
In Chicago on August 17 five lawful assignments were filed in county court. The Chicago Consolidated Iron and Steel Company with Harvey Illinois works assigned to Chicago Title and Trust Company with assets around 300000. Henry M Hosick wool merchant at 193 Michigan Street reported assets 200000 liabilities 125000. Chicago and Western Soap Works located at Kingsbury and Superior streets showed assets 30000 liabilities 50000. Louis Sibers and Son wholesale liquor dealers reported assets 35000 liabilities 80000. George Oberlie hides and leather dealer listed assets 500000.
Railway telegraphers file federal suit in Omaha to compel Union Pacific receivers to restore wages to the 1894 fixed schedule. They allege cuts violated Caldwell order and accuse officials of favoring younger workers over long serving members of the union.
Michael Ryan was arrested in St. Paul on disorderly conduct after obtaining a license to wed Ellen Cavanagh, a widow who did not know him. The notice provoked ridicule, and Mrs. Cavanagh became indignant. Ryan was examined in probate court, declared insane, and sent to an asylum.
A general strike of painters has been ordered in New York Aug 17 with sympathy walkouts from allied trades. About 1,000 workers plan to strike over wages under the $8.50 eight hour standard in contractor shops. The New York Painters union comprises five groups totaling around 1,000 members.
Six hundred Adams Express company workers in New York and Jersey City walked off the job. They say wage cuts of about one third followed president Weir taking charge in the East and many veteran staff were discharged for minor reasons.

A report states Reed Station five miles north was the scene of riot and butchery. Dan Cline shot and killed Chris Lentz. Max Lentz was fatally injured. Herbert McDowell was dangerously cut. The trouble appears tied to drinking.
The Farmers' Loan and Trust company of New York filed in the U S circuit court to foreclose a mortgage for 15 million dollars executed in 1889 by the Oregon Improvement company. The action seeks to recover the principal and possible interest, placing emphasis on the large loan secured across interstate interests with San Francisco as the filing location on August 17.
Washieton August 17 The battleship Indiana will be presented with a magnificent silver service contributed by Indiana citizens at Tompkinsville Staten Island on September 21 Acting Secretary McAdoo approved the date and Captain Evans will receive the service from the Indiana committee which will visit Tompkinsville for the presentation
Alois Dinkel man aged 50 shot his wife then killed himself after financial reverses. The tragedy occurred in New York as Dinkel faced mounting debts and a loss of hope. His wife was killed before he took his own life in the same incident, leaving the motive tied to monetary ruin.
In Kry West Florida on August 17, Weyler and Ochando clashed over the death of a Spanish lieutenant. Ochando denounced Weyler as a murderer and challenged him to a duel after a palace confrontation. Weyler allegedly forced the officer to die within 24 hours to avoid court martial.
In Maprio Aug 17 the Duke of Te tuan Spanish foreign minister says a Washington dispatch offers assurances on the Laurada filibustering case. The Laurada, linked to Cuban rifling claims, had a captain indicted in South Carolina but acquitted. Spanish authorities cite Mayport experiences and accuse the U S of not seizing arms or vessel under neutrality laws.
Bern August 17 agitation in newspapers and business circles over alleged amalgamation of independent oil firms with Standard Oil. reports say the American company controls the petroleum market and the government may facilitate Galician oil imports while considering a prohibitive duty on American oil.
A Berlin dispatch to The Times says General Bronsart von Schellendorf was dismissed Saturday as war minister largely due to General von Hahnke influence with the Emperor. It notes a potential internal political crisis in the German Empire.
The Daily News reports that Joseph Chamberlain secretary of state for the colonies has mailed an invitation to Cecil Rhodes to travel to England in January to testify before the committee of inquiry into the British South Africa Company.
Fire gutted the Woodruff block on Seventh street in Rockford injuring no one. The blaze caused over 100000 in losses with many poor families in the second story losing all their belongings and barely escaping in night clothes.

In Quincy Illinois on August 17 B Frank Jacobs an aeronaut traveling with a circus died when his balloon burst 200 feet up at Baldwin Park during a race with Professor Dudley. His parachute failed to open and he was dashed to the ground before a gathered crowd, his wife and young child present. He suffered critical, almost total bone fractures.
Mrs Ellen Wayles Harrison widow of Mr William Byrd Harrison of Upper Brandon Virginia died at the residence of Mr Alexander Randall in Baltimore. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Randolph and the oldest living descendant of Thomas Jefferson. Born and raised near Monticello.
Millions of small fish in the waters at the head of Green Bay are dying from an unknown cause. In many spots the surface and beaches are littered with dead fish. The motive theory is that extreme heat is responsible for the unusual mortality.
Kansas City August 17 Saturday marked the monthly pay day for Santa Fe railway workers with 840 employees receiving near fifty thousand dollars, the largest distribution in over three years due to heavy grain and stock movement last month.
